How is the quality of the speakerphone? Are the volume and clarity good enough so you can lay the phone on your desk and carry on a conversation with or without background noise? Is the speakerphone turned on/off by a button or side switch, or do you have to go through software commands to enable/disable speakerphone?

The speakerphone quality is good, but the speaker is on the back of the phone. It gets muffled when you set it down on anything. However, I've used mine by setting it down upside down and it works fine. There is an on/off button on the side of the phone, as well as on the virtual keypad.
I have found that people have a harder time hearing me when I'm talking on the speaker phone, but I can hear them fine. The phone needs to be relatively close to your face for callers to hear well.
