Having never seen one in person, all of the Nokia phones that have had this form factor have been lees than appealing to me in the looks department. Is it that hard to make a handsome phone with this form factor?

You gotta give to get. There is no way to get the screen and keyboard without the physical size. This is just one of the best examples of finding the happy middle ground.
