Any way to retrieve deleted pictures?

I've read that there is no trashcan or deleted items area so basically there is no way to retrieve a deleted picture - is this true?

I can't imagine that if I brought my iphone into the apple store, they wouldn't be able to, but maybe I'm wrong.
