No 3G -- No Purchase!!

Rip my heart out Steve Jobs. Jobs makes the iPhone 99% amazing and leaves out 3G because of "battery life" and "not enough room" to put the 3G antenna, yet moto just put it in the new razer w/ HSDPA 3.6. It just blows my mind how something so far advanced in technology which has all the latest bells and whistles and it doesn't come with UTMS/HSDPA. I know a lot of people don't have 3G yet but 3G can always fall back to the EDGE network just as easy. What a waste!

Just so disgusting to think i have to wait 2 yrs for version 2 of the iPhone or get a Euro version and see if it will work in the States.

I hope everyone buys and iPhone and then every complains how slow the internet is on EDGE, that will make my day.

Version 2 will be out by years end. Rumored to be Oct and unless I read it wrong, with the legal suit, no new phones will have 3G. By the way, No voice dialing or Video recording either. Look for a major 'update' ON any of the above.

It involves Qualcomm which has been the subject of a ban preventing the import 3G phones containing its chips. Don't know much more.

Dude, Steve Jobs is God.

He'll just develop a 3G chip himself.

Doubtful it will take 2 years for their next version of this phone, and outside of rumors, there is no proof this fall/winter that there will be a 3g version of this phone?

BTW, even my kids Samsung Sync has 3g hsdpa and they cost me $25.00 plus $18.00ea for a 2gig microSD card for their music.

I think I read it is being manufactured in China and has already started being made.

And other 3g hspda chips are available. But I'm also sure this broadcom/qualcom thing will be settled, or broadcom will be bought out. Samsung, LG, other mobile brands as well as Qualcom are large corporations which can easily buy them out and take them over.

The battery wasn't the only reason apple chose to go with EDGE.

1) Don't forget the iphone has built in wifi. This phone launches the new at&t and the new at&t is more than just wireless, they're tv, landline, and DSL...

2) EDGE isn't so bad. at&t supposedly spent 50 million upgrading EDGE JUST for the iphone launch. Honestly I prefer my SonyEricsson's reliable EDGE 10 to my Samsung's spotty 3G. When it works it's faster than any vzw or sprint phone I've seen, heck my SYNC in EDGE is faster loading videos (yes it can do that 😉 )than my friends RAZRm. Hang ups and infrequent connection/coverage hamper at&t's 3G much more than the competitors. For now... 😛

During the keynote and since then it almost seems that Apple/Cingular think that WiFi will make up for not putting 3G in the phone. The way they talk it seems that you can just hop on anyone's WiFi network, which is obviously NOT the case. The only WiFi I could use would be my own at my house or a coffee house that has free WiFi. I guess free WiFi is becoming more and more now days but its not like cell phone towers you can just hop on anytime you want. I wont use WiFi at my house on my phone cuzz I will be on my computer... I guess they are allowing us to have internet access while we sit on the toilet?! 🙂.

I think it is so weird that Cingular/ATT would spend 50 Mil upgrading older technology and not put 3G in more locations instead...

You've clearly not used VZW EvDO....sorry!

And most of what you do see of EvDO is limited by the PDA phone's performance. When I tether my Verizon 6700 to my laptop in a good EvDO signal. I get near DSL speeds. (It was often faster than my DSL just not quite as consistent in it's speed.)

This is a dual review, one guy from the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal.

It seems iPhone gets huge marks in every category except internet speed!

"The biggest problem is the one that most predicted: the EDGE network Apple chose for the first iPhone. Unless you're in a Wi-Fi hot spot, Internet browsing is going to be painful, Pogue said. "The New York Times's home page takes 55 seconds to appear; Amazon.com, 100 seconds; Yahoo, two minutes. You almost ache for a dial-up modem," he wrote."
