What did they do to the N75?

In all the frenzy of waiting for this - did anyone get a handle on what what missing? No WiFi, Pc Synch, no data plan etc were offered on the we site - this thing is being marketed as a music phone not a smart phone. Hope I'm wrong, but Cingular may have shredded the smart phone functionality that made the phone attractive to me.

True, but the issue will remain as to the sort of service plan support policy Cingy is going to be allowing. My local outlets are telling me data plans that will allow one to make full use of smart phone use for e-mail, PC modem etc are growing increasingly restrictive with respect to the new units they can be applied to. Symbian OS, 3G etc on the N75 will be limited in utility if the phone is relegated to the ranks of being a glorified mp3 player that can cost-effectively download and open iTunes but not PP, Word or PDF doc's. The potential PDA utility of the phone remains just that - unrealized potential. Nothing new about that I suppose - and business as usual for Cingy. I guess I'd do the same if I had an inventory of brick sized 85...

Is this true? These functions were what made me interested in the phone in the first place. 3G is not fully operational yet in Los Angeles...especially the Valley. WiFi would have been great.

But what I am most disturbed about is that there will be no ability to open attachments. Plus no FM radio. This phone is not so hot now. I like the camera ability and the MP3 player, but I wanted something more for business as well.

What a huge bummer!

I don't think Nokia web site ever said N75 had wifi. CTI-Miami claims "Nokia" told them they will have their N75's Tuesday and they say the phone has a stereo FM radio. Will these be Cingy branded? Their website says all their GSM phones are factory unlocked. If Cingy does have an exclusive, why would they allow unlocked versions w/ cingy software to be taken to other carriers? I think the phone will be fine but I could be wrong. I'm no authority on symbian os but I think it allows you to view emailed ms & pdf docs, but not edit them. I think that is still the same. Cingy is suppose to have huge 3G upgrade to the national network launched summer. Someone that actually receives their phone next week will answer these questions for us.

If I remember they never did say the phone has fm. But the only way you can access it is thru a special set of head phones. It's even on the nokia web site.

I don;t beleive it wa ever said to have had Wi-Fi, it does do some sort of PC sync.. and someone else said they had synced with outlook.. Data plans aren't usually paired in a package are they? I mean any device can use any plan they are eligible for.. ie pda plans for PDAs, smartphone for smartphones and media max for phones.. You can still install all your apps on the phone like any other symbian phone so I am stunned as to how you could have been so misinformed..

I hope I am misinformed - but if you are going to use the phone as a modem for a laptop, or take advantage of other data file transfer capabilities then Cingy has been moving towards requiring the data package they offer for smart phones or PDA's. When the N75 was listed, media services were offered but not data packages. Is the phone capable of doing all of the above, certainly. Whether it will be allowed to be used such a capacity is a different story. A number of phones in the Cingy line-up could be tethered and used for data transfer. But Cingy appears to have decided only smart phones and PDA's could be used in this fashion - and their definition of smart phone is marketing based, not technology. As to WiFi, the in itial write-ups...

I have been watching the Nokia website since they first put the N75 on it and I never saw wifi listed, just 3G, so I wasn't disapointed. So far I can't see anything missing on the phone, unless there is a problem loading symbian apps. I hope they don't get cheap with the contents in the box like a usb data cable which costs 29.99 on cingy site, 49.99 on Nokia site, and they didn't include the pop-port adapter for 3.5mm headphones,...they want us to pay them $2.99 for that, and they say the $2.99 adapter is for 2.5mm headphone plug, so do I need an adapter for the adapter? we'll know soon.

Technically your only supposed to tether if you have a dataconnect package but you can tether whatever device you have on whatever plan(ie mediamax etc) you get but you bear the risk of getting caught and being charged per Kb for usage until you see your insane bill. I don't think its a recent change..

Cingular does not care what device you use..only that you have the correct plan.

Agreed. Its the only cost effective way. Maybe its just my local store, but they refused to sell me a dataconnect package on a LG CU500 a month or two ago. Said the rules had changed. . .

Nokia specs say nothing about WiFi or for that matter speakerphone.

True. Like many things, the phone was touted larger than life. See link below for WiFi:

Nokia users manual online at Nokia (p. 20) makes reference to a loudspeaker (a.k.a. speakerphone). Rumors that the first 10 phone buyers would win a free trip to the International Space Station with Stephen Hawking may, however, been a bit over the top.

it has speakerphone. I'm guessing you hit the right soft key when connected (options) and then select "speaker" ..
