Delay due to NFC?

honzik

Ok, I know this post will be a bit out there, but bear with me. I know that Cingular has been involved in trials with NFC technology and from what I understand, it was pretty much a great success. I also know that the 6131 (my phone - aka the 6126 and the 6133) has been upgraded with NFC for some of the trials.

Suppose Cingular now wants to get into this in a big way, and says to Nokia: we will release the 6126 and the N75, but we want them modified to include NFC, and they will be the flagships of our NFC system which we'll roll out in May. That could account for the delay, right? Also, since NFC uses an unregulated portion of the spectra (13.56 MHz) they shouldn't have to get reapproved by the FCC, or would they?

Here are some l...

Correct me if I'm wrong (as I often am...) but doesn't NFC require additional hardware? It seems unlikely that at this late stage in the game they would change a phone so drastically, requiring phones to be basically remanufactured when they were that close to being released.
My fairly reliable source at the local Cingy store tells me only that the N75 is delayed for some software issue until May. 😢

Makitso,

I think you're probably right - there would be an additional device/chipset needed and it would most likely take too long.

What I'm doing is grasping at straws, trying to figure out why Cingular has delayed this phone to such an extent that it has actually hurt them financially. The only explanation is either that they are incompetent or that they are delaying it to add features that will make them more money in the long run.

Probably, as you suggest, it is software related, and if I were to guess, it is software that is related to being able to make them the (probably sole) supplier of video/music content. Cingular does have a nickel and dime mentality (what is it 5 to 10 dollars a month for push-to-talk, I mean, really.)...

Well, straws we are all grasping for, Honzik. There is no good reason that a company would announce plans then do the apparent dance that Cingy/Nokia are doing. It happened before with the 6126. On again, off again, then on again. Re-branding? Adding an NFC chip? Reworking the software again? Might as well be delayed due to a plot set in motion by Samsung and T-Mobile! And don't forget the Triads out of Hong Kong.
Yes, exasperation has set in.
Maybe unlocked at the higher price is worth it. Now, if only they'd release it unlocked somewhere! 😳

I was told by nokia that the n75 has not been released b/c it is still overseas. it has not come to the US yet. they have a few phones that are supose to be released but not till they hit the US. I was told this by 3 different reps within the past 2 weeks. And in my opinion it would make since seeings it hasn't left the nokia expected soon site. they said it stays on site until released and has nothing to do with cingular. cingular suposivly doesn't decide on the phones until it reaches the US.Thats why cingular knows nothing about the phone. My cingular stores know they are getting a phone or 2 but do not know of which ones yet. not sure if all this would be right by the reps but it makes since to me.and 3 different ones told me the same ...

theres some holes in that, Singular has the N75 on their price sheets and rebate forms. and the SKU number so i'd think they know its comming.

they could but none of the ones here in mobile alabama know. they know they are getting a nokia they just don't know which one and they have no papers on any certain ones. I have called all around this area. but my luck we will prob. be the last to get anything. but according to around here they do not know which one they are getting and have nothing on it. now they could just be saying that to keep the calls down, who knows. but when I called nokia they told me it was not released in the US yet and was still overseas and they had no idea of when it would be here, but they do know they are releasing a few phones this month but do not have info on which ones just yet.there are a few that have been on the site for a while and those will go fir...

The phone is not comming people, at least not anytime soon. Most sane folks would have given up by now. but we were baited with tid bits of information, leading us to believe it was just around the corner, but its not, its not comming for another couple of months if at all. Cingular and Nokia ****ed this one up big time. The n75 is a Relic now, with its 7 month delay, phones like the Iphone are for superior and have been promised to us with specific dates, times, and commercials. We must show the manufactuers and carriers we won't tolerate this type of behavior, if they promise us a phone and don't deliver then we find a new better phone that will. E-bay auctions, and rumors are not how you release a phone or get the public interested. I am t...

The N75 is probably only a relic to those in these forums. None of my friends have any idea what a Nokia N75 is yet. My point is, as disappointing as its delay is, I wouldn't expect a backlash.

Umm...the N75 has not been released overseas. It was developed specifically for the North America market and Cingular in particular (the UMTS bands work w/ Cingular's spectrum, not the bands used by European carriers).

This phone was designed specifically for the U.S. market, and specifically for Cingular. It's not available anywhere yet (not even in the U.S.), much less in Europe.

Ok I'm not gonna go back and forth on this I was going by what nokia said and you can call them to dispute it. I just got info from them and past it on and the info I got was from more than one time calling and from different reps. I'm going with what they said thats just me.. it doesn't bother me on who knows what cos its not making the phone be released any sooner. nokia told me that they don't know but a day a head of time on the release. so yall are more than welcome to fight it out on who knows what and whose right or wrong. 😉
