***Message to Verizon Wireless CEO, Denny Strigl***

IceCop

Mr. Strigl, this message is intended to bring light to the fact that your phone software development team is failing. The user interface that is now in place on all new Verizon Wireless Handsets is not creating the “buzz” that I am sure you and your team had intended. I am sure this topic has surfaced a few times in department board meetings, and you, as the CEO of Verizon Wireless, now need to step in to resolve this problem before it spins out of control. Either improve it or remove it.

Verizon Wireless is NOT a manufacturer, you are a service provider. Leave the manufacturing to the businesses that do it best. You and your team have designed and built the BEST wireless network and you see the people buying into it. That is what you do...

I could not agree more. This is a very well written message and should be forwarded to the CEO of Verizon. I to, have been a customer of Verizon since it was first offered in Iowa. That goes back to 1984. I have been a customer of Verizon in Minnesota. I too, have used all the other carriers and by a wide margin Verizon has been the best! In my opinion that is not true today because of the User Interface and Customer Service. You are very right, the phone makers do know best on how to make their phones work, not the service provider. The new phones just do not offer what they are capable of doing. Your letter should be a signed by all that agree and then sent to the CEO. Verizon needs to come to grips with " ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT A...

VZW chooses to implement a standardized UI in order to reduce their overall support costs.

VZW chooses to restrict and/or limit native phone capabilities (such as Bluetooth, file transfers, etc.) in order to protect/enhance their GIN revenue stream.

If VZW would think only out of the box a bit...

VZW will never get a nickel from me for any GIN service or application. I don't care about ring tones or games. If they are looking for incremental revenue from me, it won't ever be from GIN.

However, I would be willing to pay VZW an extra one-time fee, say $50, in order to be able to purchase an unadulterated phone with native UI and all features intact. $50 is better than $0 and keeps me on their network. Otherwise, when Cingular cove...

Yet another great idea, I would be on board to do the same. I care little about all the extra stuff, but I use Verizon phone both in the office and in the field. Having the original UI from Motorola would be priceless!

This sounds like a good business model.
One more comment about GIN and other applications ordered from VZW...they can not be transferred when you get a new phone. I had my first Motorola full of games that I downloaded...all lost when I got my new phone. There was probably a way they could have been transferred, but two VZW representatives told me there was not. So, I will never download more games to any VZW phone.

It's just another sign that the big companies are always fighting for control, and in this case, we get lesser quality products because of it. Verizon does not want competition from phone manufacturers and it makes sense until people get tired of it. When GSM companies finally achieve parity in their networks, Verizon will be in trouble with this kind of policy. But, by then, everyone will be on a family plan or taking part of in-calling and then it will be hard to change providers. I have noticed that one provider is allowing free calling to 5 named perons, but that only works in one direction. It seems to me that many of the best phones covered by phonescoop are not available by any USA provider.

Great letter.
Of course, no one will see it and everyone will fuss at you for criticizing Verizon. But, I for one, agree totally. I can't believe I can't even add an address to my contacts!

Wonderful letter. Informed and brief. But I agree with the other members of the forum that our voices will not be heard by mere letters. So what can we do? Waste verizon resources! Call them on your lunch breaks, complain via emails and surverys, send in letters. The only way to get it through their heads is to impact their bottom line. I call about twice a month just to ask about "new software" and not liking the current offerings.

Waste their time... show them that although we are a small % of customers that we make a difference. I work with a customer service deparment of large size and if we increase their call volumes by a few hundred calls a day, this will dramatically impact there service levels.

As a business person with ethi...

Very well put IceCop! I agree 110%!!!! I've been against the Verizon OS for years. They're not manufactuers. Some people buy Nokias for just for their famous Series 40 OS. Its what made Nokia the success that it is today. Granted, it's a simplistic DOS-like interface but still, people love it!

They weren't haven't it whent they were making phones for Verizon directly. Nokia phones have the Verizon OS now but thats only because they're not even real Nokia's. They just have the Nokia name.

But anyway I'm why haven't Motorola and Samsung put their foot down about this. Motorola's OS is not great but it is well known and famous. Maybe we should write to the manufactuers too about this. What the hell is the point if every phone has the same...

dear dieter zetsche,

yeah, i have owned chrysler and now daimler chrysler products for years now. yada yada.

i have been loyal and not asked for much.

we, as customers, however, are tired of certain things that you are failing year after year to deliver.

see...we want wings on our cars. these wings will not be for show mind you.

we want to fly!

so you should probably start putting wings on your cars ooooor we're going to buy a ford.

that is all.

p.s. companies who make billions of dollars do not care about the 3% of their customer base who dislike the aesthics and functionality of their products. come on now.

Oh brother. Give me a break. I for one am also unhappy w/ the Verizon UI and I'm going to take the phone back tomorrow. I guess I'll get the Q. The KRZR has the same exact UI as the freebie Samsung phones!! Why buy a Mercedes w/ a Geo Metro engine in it?
