Question: WiFi for Calls?
Anybody had any experience using the 8820 in hotspots for making/receiving voice calls? The sales guy in the AT&T store insists that the WiFi feature is all about being able to download web pages faster. As he put it, "Why would we be selling phones that let you BYPASS the voice network charges?"

This phone is supposed to have UMA capabilities-which means it would integrate seamlessly with a wifi connection for voice calls-AT&T has been a part of the UMA development team, but they sure don't advertise it.
try it- let us know if it works 😳

T-Mobile's version is the only one with UMA, in fact, T-Mobile is the only carrier that offers UMA. AT&T may be trying to develope it, bt they haven't launched it.

I have the T-Mobile 8320 Curve, which also has UMA, and yes indeed, it works over wi-fi. My sister lives out in the country with no T-Mo signal. I gave her my old wireless router, hooked it up and lo and behold, for the first time, I was able to receive and make calls on my T-Mo Blackberry at her house.
Maybe you need to switch carriers.
