551 - SIM PIN question

LisaSor

I just got a Motorola 551 phone (Cingular). Under Settings, Security, there are two items I have a question on:

1. SIM PIN - what does this do?
2. Under New Passwords, I have an option SIM PIN2. I tried entering the last four digits of my phone number and now it appears I have one more try left before my SIM deactivates. How do I know what the SIM PIN2 number is?

Thanks

Your SIM pins are for your security protectiuon. You can set these to keep people out of your phone & kepp your phonebook from being erased, some will even keep your sim from being deprogramed. Most of the codes that are SIM related you get from your carrier. If you bought from a Cingular company owned stoer contact them & they can tell you all of the pins/codes (sim pin, puk code etc...) if you purchased through an agent or a national retailer, you need to contact Cingular cust service or find your nearest retail location.

Thanks for the info.

I have a few more questions:

1. In playing around with changing the SIM PIN2 password, I managed to only get it so that I only have one more retry left. Will my phone stop working if I enter one more incorrect password?

2. I don't see any reference in the settings for a PUK code. What is that?

I'll go back to the Cingular store this weekend to ask them for my SIM PIN2 code.

Your sim card will be burnt if you try putting in the wrong number too many times. You need to contact customer service (1-800-331-0500) in order to get your code and save yourself about $25-$50.

I entered the PIN# 3 times last night trying the same thing being a new Cingular user. The PUK came up and after calling Cingular they gave me the code and my phone was as good as new. It didn't fry the SIM card.

Here is how to buy more trys when hacking at sim PIN. Shut down the phone after the 2nd failed attempt, then start up again.

1. SIM PIN - what does this do?
2. Under New Passwords, I have an option SIM PIN2. I tried entering the last four digits of my phone number and now it appears I have one more try left before my SIM deactivates.
