I'm traveling to Japan next month and wondering if there is a good solution for a US traveler? I'm not sure if either a Quad band GSM phone or the new Motorola A840 CDMA/GSM phone will even work in Tokyo. Some sites say the KDDI has CDMA service but probably different frequencies than the US----I think the GSM carriers need UMTS capabilities---Rich and others help!

You will need a WCDMA phone with the 2100mhz fequency. Japan is one of the few countries that is 3G. So no a CDMA or a quad band GSM phone will not work.

You cen rent phones from cellhire.com You might be able to buy a cheap PP phone while there?
