solar phones?

does anyone know why there is not a cell phone with a solar cell that powers it as the primary source? As a non engineer it seems that it could be set up similar to calculators. 😎

There's one BIG problem with that. Solar cells don't collect NEARLY enough energy to power a cell phone. The calculator is a simple device compared to a cell phone, it's a few chips that do simple math. The cell phone on the other hand is more like a tiny computer with processors, screens, and a radio transmitter. The photovoltaic cell on your calc acts like a battery, providing instant power as long as the light hits it, but take it where there's no light and you're screwed. In order for a cell phone to use solar cells a few things have to happen.

1.) we'd have to figure out how to make photovoltaic cells that garner a LOT more energy from the amount of light that hits them.

2.) We'd need the ability to store the collected energy...
