My experience at the AT&T store

To whom it may concern: ๐Ÿ™„

I had recently lost my cell phone and was frantic! I went to the ATT store and was serviced by one of the specialists and when I saw the prices on the replacements, he was not helpful at all...simply told me to "Go to Walmart", which I did; ...

I've had a similar experience. I recommended a customer purchase an AT&T prepaid phone off the rack at WalMart to replace a broken, non-insured, not upgradeable contract phone. I even told her I would set it up for her once she had the device. Apparently, I was not clear enough in specifying AT&T brand, because she came back with a Boost Mobile phone.

Since then, I've always tried to be very specific when making recommendations. I assume the customer doesnt know anything, but at the same time I dont want to be patronizing. I just try to be very thorough, understanding, and sympathetic to their situation. Remember, those idiot, b!#*@y customers do talk to their friends, and even if they are wrong their friends will believe them, and ...

You got the analogy wrong. It would be a free car with gas. Gas being the service, car being the equipment. It would be nice though.

Did you give her any direction to be sure it's an AT&T device? I always do, just in case.

I feel your pain. Our network uses unlocked GSM phones. We dont put any additional programming in them, so any GSM phone will work on our system. i have customers that come in form time to time when they break their phones looking for options. I explain that our system uses these phones, and that they take sim cards, and other carriers that also use tGSM. So they come back in with aa net 10, which here dont have sim cards...

They yell at me, after ive explained to them what phones, what system, etc. I actually had a woman whip a phone at my head.

....the moral is........dont sell them anything but your own. If they dont like it tough, if they buy something off someone else, I tell them we dont gaurantee it and there no promise I can ...

I wonder if disclosing her email is a violation of company policy - regardless, it's highly unprofessional.

Perhaps I'll spend five minutes and email the district to find out.

The better question would be why would you have somebody activate a prepaid phone on a contract account...? The phone is going to be shut off once the billing system realizes the serial number for the phone is not compatible. (At least with AT&T that is.)

it's isn't necessarily "activate" since their account is contract and it's on their sim.

hmm, unlocked gsm or prepaid from the same carrier does not change the fact that it is a contract account.

it was a decent suggestion to save the customer money and save his ears from her wying.

So what was your associate able to do for her that you were not?
And did you not get in trouble for suggesting she use a pre-paid phone on a contract account? That is definitely against policy.

Perhaps the next time you give a story about a "stupid" customer, it should be one where you don't look like a sleazy, bad salesmen.

he's not a sleezy salesman...

(broke, lost, stolen)
no insurance, not able to upgrade, and the retail is too much for them... you can suggust that they purchase a prepaid of the same carrier at a fraction of the price and with their account activated on the f**king sim it works just the same...

he's actually helping the customer. i've sent plenty of customers across the street to target to get a pay as you go phone and swap sims... it helps them and it lets them know your not just in it for their money, but rather to find a solution.

and policy would rather a customer on an unregistered phone than a customer on the 29th day of the 30 day allowed suspended line for lost/stolen

It works? Sure... for about two months. After that point they get to call me and ask why their phone is shut off, and I get to explain the difference between prepaid and postpaid accounts, and the fact that our billing system will render the ESN useless.
Please tell me you do not work for AT&T, cause now I know where half of these people are calling in from.

its still against policy. This is also why I want to know what his coworker did. It sounded like he/she was able to help the customer in store. Its possible the customers phone will be shut off if att finds out that it is a pre-paid sim.
So yes it is possible to do, something I used to do, and something many sales reps still do. That does not make it right.

Jan 25, 2008, 9:49 PM
yes. I admitted it is possible. its also possible to steal a stangers phone and put your sim into it. still not acceptable and shouldn't be suggested to customers.

Im confused do you work for t-mobile? I saw that you said you don't work for att. I am not sure of other carriers policies so its possible that it is perfectly fine for YOU to make these type of suggestions.

So did you score that mangager position with your sweet grammar skills?

From all the AT&T employees I have ever spoken to, they all agree that the practice of using a pre-paid phone to replace a contract phone is very much against policy. My guess for why is it probably costs the company a hell of a lot of money. But I personally have no problem with AT&T employees jack kniifing their own company, it helps us (the competition).
