What "activity" are they messuring? Views, posts, other?
How often does it updates?
The reason why I ask is because I've seen that it the activity meter seems to be static, it points towards more "activity" to some threads that been dead for ages, or even though there's more activity in other posts it stays pointing out to the same old one.

It's simply the number of messages posted in the last x days. (I think it's two weeks... not sure off the top of my head.) It's updated constantly.
