You can make a downloaded song a ringtone, but not by using the itunes transfer. Either bluetooth it or use the cable and motorola phone tools to put the song outside the itunes library. Your phone can then use it as a ringtone. The only thing preventing you from doing it now is software, so if there's not a hack for it it there may be one in the future.
