Ah, I always say "Welcome to XXXXX". I used to ask how they were, but I "have" to give a different greeting now. The funny thing is that customers are so used to hearing the other that they respond with "I'm fine, thank you."

You are getting 'no thanks I am just looking " becuase your greeting is generic and customers have been programmed to go into defense mode when they here it. Take the time to think of a bunch of different greetings that you can use. The first few moments should be spent on a little small talk, get them comfortable a little and then you can transition with something like "what brings into the store today".
And please do not say as a reply to " I'm just looking" "ok, my name is ____" let me know if you need anything" I walk out of stores when I hear that.

"I am just looking" "great, I love to look too!" What are you looking for, because we hide the really good stuff." Get them laughing man! Have fun with it!

i have 2 favorite things about customers, 1) when they walk past the verison sign and i guess look past all the verizon decals all over the store and ask if we sell cingular and if not where is the cingular dealer.....
2) i love when a customer walks in while your dealing with another customer and they disregard that and start telling you what their problem is....(sorry sir you'll have to wait till im done with her.
