Is this really necessary?

I just wrote a post that involved the phrase "If a * guy" in one of the sentences. It was edited to "I***uy." Link:

I understand that *** should be censored. Makes perfect sense to me. But it seems a little silly to me to edit something that is a perfectly innocent sentence that becomes nonsensical with the censors. Can we get a reversal on that one, or can someone give me an explanation?

It does have a special exception to not filter " if a guy", " if a girl" etc. Unfortunately, those type of exceptions have some limitations, such as not working if they're right at the start of a message (first character) or in some cases if they're right at the start of a paragraph. It's a tricky technical thing that I wish had an easy solution.

I've tried to make it work as well as I can. It's not easy to balance between over- and under-filtering.

If we only implemented the most basic kind of filter, there are certain very obvious "tricks" that nearly everyone would use to get around it in a heartbeat. Everyone (who wants to swear, that is) would use those tricks, and the words wouldn't be censored at all. The tricks are so obvious t...

I believe someone used "sport*water" the other day to describe vitamen water, and that phrase hits the filter too.
