Help Needed! re Pop-over Ads

Rich Brome

Nov 6, 2007, 4:10 PM
Many of you probably noticed the Verizon pop-over ads that were running recently.

Please reply to this thread with whether you saw the ad (if you're not sure, you probably didn't; it's hard to miss.)

If you did see it in recent days, how often did it appear each day? Once? Several times? Many times?

I would really appreciate it if anyone that has a moment could reply and help us out with this.

(FYI, They are supposed to appear absolutely no more often than once per day, but they seem to have been appearing more often for some people. The last thing we want to do is annoy you guys with constant ads like that, so for now we've turned off that ad campaign completely until we can fix the problem.)

Thanks! 🙂

In the short term, sure. Those ads pay very well, which is why we run them.

But if they pop up too often, people get really annoyed, which means they might not want to visit as often, and they won't be as likely to recommend phonescoop.com to other people.

Bottom line: it's more important to keep you guys happy. That's always better for everyone in the long term (even advertisers, since they need a place to advertise.)

That's why we only allow the overlay ads if they are capped at one per day, and we're also pretty strict and hands-on about how they look and work. You'd be amazed at the obnoxious crap some advertisers try to get away with. We try to keep it relatively sane.

Its popped up quite a few times. Kinda gets annoying after a while because if you dont pay attention you accidently click onto it instead of the thread you are trying to.

I can't be sure exactly how many times, but I've seen it at least 4 times in the past 3 days.

I'm not digging it...

For me. I think the only time I saw it twice was when I deleted cookies. Does it track daily viewing by cookies?

Then you're probably missing a lot of useful functionality on a lot of web sites, including this one.

My work computers do not download all cookies. They block popups, and all the side adds on this site. I think I got it every time I went to the site from this location. It's not really a bother to me though...

Naturally, yes.

Cookies are your friend. They do many useful things here on phonescoop.com. Why would you delete them? ☚ī¸

Cookies are also the lead entry point for spyware. I regular do a scan on my computer and find an average of 10 or so adware cookies on my computer from "safe" browsing. By safe I mean no porn and generally this site, cnn, google/news and such. If cookies were as intended I wouldn't be so hasty to toss them, but they are too much of a liability for my taste.

I saw it at least twice. I don't know if it was any more than that, but I know which ad you're talking about.
