Anyhow, an Alltel sales rep has written in to share his insider tips to getting the most out of your Alltel experience, whatever that may be. Enjoy!

Get a 1 year contract and upgrade every 9 months. "You can upgrade 90 days before your contract expires. So if you do a 1 year contract each time, you can upgrade every 9 months. Alltel reps are not supposed to "stack" contracts, so your original one will be removed (or lowered to 1 month remaining) every time. With Alltel, you pay $60 more for the phone than a 2 year contract."

Upgrade early with a 2 year contra...

I don't agree with "avoid Authorized agents". My experience with them far exceeds my experience from the Alltel retail stores. They were happy to get my phones fixed and to call and get my incorrect bills corrected. They also can throw in free accessories. They seemed to care more about me as a customer than Alltel.

Also to add to this reply, you are covered after 30 days in ANY corp. store.

Should you have issues with your phone after the first 30 days, take it into ANY corp. store for what should be QUALITY service. If you have a problem, file a complaint with the store manager, A.S.A.P.

You've got a couple good theories but they are not all entirely correct.

1. If you do a 1 year contract you will pay anywhere from 50-100 more for the phone. Yes the first time you can upgrade after only 9 months but after that, when you upgrade the new contract starts on the last day of your old contract so you would have to wait a year before you could upgrade 3 months before your contract ends. This is done automatically by the system.

2. If you buy accessories you could probably talk your way into maybe a month early or 4 months before contract ends but I haven't seen anything earlier than that and they same rule applies with the contract starting on the last day of cycle. Authorized Dealers have no say max 90 days from contract.

Avoid "Authorized Agents" with Alltel. "I know this is -not- the case with other carriers, but if you purchase something from them, you're on your own (and this includes Alltel's own online shopping site. You can't return anything purchased there into a retail store at all).

This is NOT true. Phones purchased from an agent come from the same warehouse that you purchase from a retail store. Agents can and do a much better job of taking care of issues with phones because of two things. 1. Typically they are more experienced and knowledgeable than the most retail "Sales Rep" who get paid to sell you a phone, not to take care of your issue. An agent only has his customer service to sell to you indirectly by the phone service that you need...
