Going National?

I am a bit out of the loop with the latest on Alltel, but my instincts tell me they could be going national with the buy outs and marketing campaign they have had lately. I live in the Baltimore Washington market and Alltel has been advertising in our region even though this area is not one of their markets.

Just speculation...

Yes they want to eventually. The just need the spectrum. I believe they are looking at some of Metro PCS's. How soon it happens is unknown because of how much the whole industry changes and how rapidly.

Right now they are content on being THE rural provider. Sprint and Verizon rely heavily on them to be the person that covers their customers when their customer drive a mile or two off the main road.

Verizon doesn't have to rely on Alltel as much as Sprint does, as Verizon operates in the cellular band in most markets they serve, plus Verizon is willing to serve some rural markets, where Sprint only operates in the PCS band, and cover few rural markets. Verizon relies on Alltel in upper Wisconsin & southwestern Wisconsin (Verizon's PRL has USCC priority in southern Wisconsin outside of Milwaukee, Madison, & Green Bay markets), Nebraska outside of Omaha, upper Michigan, lower Michigan (even in SW Michigan where they have a newly built network with some holes in it), North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and other states where they have little ...

Alltel is truly attempting to be the largest rural wireless provider. Currently, Alltel is on the right path but still needs additional spectrum in certain regions. Alltel wants to be the nation's largest rural wireless carrier and in most aspects it is. I still don't see Alltel moving into the top tier 1 markets in the US. Currently, this is the requirement to be a national carrier (how many tier 1 markets you operate in).
Alltel is a cash cow (strong financials) and will continue to acquire smaller wireless carriers for growth. However, I don't see Alltel acquiring Metro PCS for two reasons: Tier 1 markets and 1900mhz. Alltel typically looks for 800-850 MHz licenses due to the lower cost to maintain. Yes, I know Alltel has PCS licenses bu...

Alltel is a well respected rural wireless provider. They are probably going to be one of the only carriers in the country to offer outstanding service in outlying areas, in which, they probably will build on market share. And maybe, if given the opportunity to enter into the right areas, be a national provider one day, but that is a maybe.
