I've said this before but felt I had to post it again. If you can get Alltel don't even go shopping anywhere else. I've been with other big dogs in the past and to be honest with you my Alltel signal has always been stronger. The customer service is always great as well. Whenever I call customer service to add or disable a feature for my phone, the longest I had to wait to talk to someone was 3 minutes.

I actually have to agree with you on this matter because Alltel seems to be doing a better job especially in its market and as a rural carrier then its rivalries, but I am not sure to say that they are better then the big boys. In some cases, Alltel would roam off of the bigger boys, which allows more/better signal/coverage in your area.

For a rural area and the markets, that it serves and dominates, I think it is wise to pick ALLTEL but if you want a better carrier and the bigger boys, I think that one should pick the bigger boys.

Smaller companies tend to have better customer care because they need to focus on keeping those customers since they have a smaller area that they cover and small customers as a total.

Does it really matter though if you have to use the other companies towers? It doesn't cost you a penny more to do so. I do know what you mean by this because whenever I go to Green Bay or Milwaukee I'm using Verizon's towers. Everything works exactly the same on my phone including the axcess applications and mobi TV. To me the customer service and the other points I made earlier definetly surpass the crappy treatment from a big boy company.

Alltel doesn't serve Indiana, where I live, but I have roamed on Alltel in SW Michigan (using a VZW phone) and have always had problems with reception, especially along I-94 & I-196. I always had dropped calls and when i did have a call that stayed up, I had static, and it wasn't from my phone because it works fine on Verizon and in rural Indiana on US Cellular. Another problem I had to deal with was my phone roaming on analog on part of the trip. I didn't have to deal with as much analog when I went up there in 2004, but I still had to deal with analog at the state line. Since Verizon acquired Crickets' licenses in Michigan, I hope the I-94 stretch is better than Alltel's network is since that part of the network was built out, which Cr...

Keep in mind, even though VZ has roaming agreements with Alltel, your phone has software in it that forces it to search for VZ towers first. If there happens to be a VZ tower anywhere in the area your phone will not pay any attention to a Alltel tower hince issues with reception.
I am not familiar with this particular area and therefore cannot tell you if the reception is normally good or bad for Alltel customers. I just know that if a cell phone can reach 1 mile to a tower and still be able to receive a faint signal and if there is a VZ tower a mile from where you are, even if there is a Alltel tower right beside you your phone will use the VZ tower because of the software loaded in the phone. This is because everytime VZ uses a Alltel tow...

I think he typoed. My alltel phone will always look for Alltel first so I might get 1 bar where if it freely went to VZW I might get 4 or vice versa.

I understand that my Verizon phone will search for a Verizon tower before it would switch to an Alltel tower. But for where I've traveled in Michigan, Alltel's reception isn't up to par. I'll have to travel I-94 from the Michigan/Indiana state line to see how Verizon's reception is now that they cover that route, where before, my phone went into analog on Alltel, once I hit the state line, then a few miles up the road, my phone would switch back to digital. I always had to deal with static on Alltel. When I made a call on US Cellular in Logansport Indiana, I had no problems with reception. I have yet to try Alltel's network in Wisconsin, but I won't find out until I trave to the northern part of the state, north of Green Bay, since that...

you might wanna check ur prl and make sure its up to date because if there is another carriers tower in the area it will handoff to that tower not just an alltel tower. i work for alltel tech support and never heard of that issue in that area. we do have agreements with verizon and they with us but they also have agreements with other people. so if u have and oudated prl you phone could be handing off to a diff carrier other than alltel. it is also possible it could be hitting a cell one tower which we now own and there have been issues with that

I updated my PRL before that trip. I will update it again when I make my next trip up to Michigan. As for other CDMA carriers, the only other carrier in the Benton Harbor/New Bufflao area before Verizon was Sprint. I doubt it was Sprint that picked up my call as I got at the most, 2 bars. Once in a while, it was 1 bar. It doesn't help that there are few towers up around that area, as well as a lot of trees, but reception has never been that great along the I-94/I-196 route. But I'll have to try it out along I-94 in a month or 2 since Verizon now covers that route, but not I-196 going to Saugatuck or Fennville. I don't know if Verizon & Sprint have roaming agreements in Michigan. Verizon & Sprint don't have a lot of roaming agreements...

Yes, it is very important if a company uses another company’s towards because that will enhance their coverage in their areas which they lack in or aren’t fairing that well in, and that is why in the wireless industry there are many roaming deals in some areas where the carrier doesn’t even operate but can now because of those deals. It doesn’t cost people additional moneys; however, it does cost the carrier who is paying the roaming amount, which is added to your overall plan. (Meaning the price is already built in reflecting roaming agreements and prices) Well first and foremost if the carrier that you are on were not in that area, they would tend to go to their affiliates first before they roam off of another bigger carrier. That is he...

***AVOID***

I have had Alltel for less than a week. The phones we got did not work in area (rural northern Louisiana). We called customer service, and were told to bring our phones to an Alltel store (not a both in Wal-Mart or an authorized dealer). We did, and after were refused any service because we bought the phones and service from www.alltel.com. We told them to cancel our service because we were dissatisfied with the customer service already. Again they refused to do so. We called customer service again, and were told again to bring the phones to an Alltel store. After explaining what had happened, they asked if we wanted to file a complaint about the store we dealt with (in Natchitoches, La), and they said that if we called the co...
