I am also curious, but on the retail side of the equation. I will soon be an employee of ALLTEL and I was wondering the same thing! Thanks!

Well, I work for them, in the Virginia market.
It is the best money (as a sales rep.) I have made. (especially in central VA, as we're not the busiest, in terms of business sales) I am a PT Sales and Service Rep. ('til I get through college)
Commissions are decent, of course the better payout is on the higher sales and higher rates, and more features that you sell. Such as text messaging and mobile web and the new touch-to-talk service, that is due to expand and be evern better. The only drawback is a 180 day change in the commission cycle (say someone leaves, or gets their phone disconnected and service terminated within 180 days of you selling it) leaving you with some negatives in your current month. Easily compensated for, if you s...

The 180 day thing isnt that bad! Western Wireless' chargeback period is currently 270 days.

Usually you get a new phone, a Motorola v262, or maybe a slider (Kyocera SE44)

However, you are in a call center and aren't actively demonstrating a phone in front of a person on the sales floor. So I truely can't say what call center policy is.

I think you do get a phone, I'm almost sure (or at least one at a signifigant discount).

Sorry, I don't know about the call center policy.

ok yes i work in tech support in LR, AR. you do get a phone, which is whatever they have, i got a 720, and then it went to the lg 3200, but now if you have had it a year you can pick, or go to a store and upgrade for a 2 year contract (which as an employee it doesnt matter, it actually doesnt "exsist". The pay is good, i got a raise before six months, and then you get more raises the better you do i think it is every 6 months or a year, you get paid more if you work before 7 and after 7 . dental and health is good, and commision is pretty good. questions answered i can answer more if need be.

Alltel is awesome, I've been working there for a little while now. My advice is don't take the phone they give you, go on ebay or somewhere and buy a v710 (like I did) and put insurance on it. You don't wanna be the only sales rep there without one. Plus if you have the 710, its so much easier to sell them and to sell the high end accessories like the bluetooth headsets because you can demo them to people. Sell lots of text messaging and other data products and you'll be fine. It's a good company with good benefits and they reward their people well.

But if your doing it just so you can get a free cell phone, you're a tool and you should go be a wal-mart greeter somewhere. No offense to wal mart greeters.

Just started to feel the effects of the merger as a former WW person. (I live in Paris, TX.) Overall it is about the same as any other company I have been with but WWC was more laid back and relaxed in its office atmosphere.
Alltel is certainly corporate in its approach and TighT in the rear in its attitude. Main problem I have had is they tend to pay a slight bit better but the stiff top down attitude throws a higher level of tension on an already tense retail atmosphere.
Same as WWC, they push a team attitude but pay out on individual revenue so you end up with office tension over who is getting the sales and a hidden tension over who gets what customer/sales that another rep may have dealt with in the past. My feeling is that a store...
