FYI
If you have a Smartphone plan with Alltel you are not allowed to change to regular individual account. You have to stay with the Smartphone plan for the duration of your 2 years.

Unless the salesperson who activated you is neglectful, it is made abundantly clear as to WHY this is.

Oh, and FYI, AT&T made me do the same thing when I upgraded 90 days prior to my contract expiration.

Yes, you can. If you brought the phone outside of alltel, then, you can have any plan on your phone. I brought a 6700 off of ebay and have the $49.99 1000 minute plan on it. Alltel can't make you have one of their ridiculous plans for smartphones when you brought the phone retail or ebay in my case

Actually, a customer that gets a smart phone is supposed to be put on a smart choice plan. Otherwise they could end up with a high bill. Take the Blackberry's for instance, they are connected to the Internet 24/7. If you put the blackberry on a regular phone plan, I don't even want to guess how high your bill would be. That is why the smart choice plans come with unlimited Internet access.

The same with others. They will search for the Internet and each time they search, it charges you minutes.

Thus the reason why you need a smart choice plan with smart phones. Any smart sales person will not sell a customer a smart phone with out the smart choice plan for this reason. Unless the rep is new and UN-aware of this.

that is because if u get a smartphone for the sale price u must stay on a smartchoice plan. only way around this is ebay or buying a smartphone at the full retail price then u can be on any plan u choose. blackberry on the other hand u have to be on a dataplan otherwise u get charged an additional 45 dollars a month.

It is more than $45. Like i said, it is constantly connected to the Internet and with out the smart choice plan, you are racking up minutes. I saw a bill last month go through with that issue. The person owed over $500, all because they where on a regular plan and there blackberry was constantly on the Internet and couldn't be taken off.

There is also the 29.99 add on that they can use. Alltel has ridiculously removed that from new options and your internal system but it is still available. You can have a smartphone and that plan. Or a smartphone and no data plan. There isn't a requirement. That is a common misconception with Alltel employees.

The only exception to this is black berry. Because those ping the network. Regular windows/palm smartphones only do it when you open the browser or use another data function.

What about the $10/mo add on you can get for Unlimited Data Minutes? Would that work for all but the blackberry or not?

That I don't know for sure. I don't think it will because there is a difference between the data connection for the two....

There's a few ways around this. One is go into the store and tell the rep you want to use the smart phone for just the "integrated" use of the pda on the phone and want to go back to the National Plan. They cant MAKE you stay on this plan, they will just warn you that you wont be able to use the internet on the device. Leave the store and call customer service and ask for tech support. Here tell them that you have a smart phone and you just want internet access. Its a AML code they can put on your bill which will cost roughly 29.99 a month.

Now lets say that the store location wont do it for some reason... ( which is against the law since they advertise Plan changes anytime )

If you still have your old phone. Go to Alltel and t...

will not work. when u get the smart phone for the discount u can change ur plan to any plan but it has to be smartchoice. if anytime during the duration of that contract esp the first 6months the rep will find out and will lose credit for the sale and switch you back to the smartchoice plan if u move off of it. it is said upfront (at least at my store) that this will happen. this is actually part of policy. smartphone for discount = smartphone plan no matter what! feel free to buy it outright unless a blackberry cus u will get smacked w an additional 45 dollar charge because of the automatic feature audit system.

I disagree. If for some reason the store rep and store manager are saying it cant be done, tell them you want to talk to corporate. Again it would be false advertising. The only plan it can not be on is the unlimited plan, because of roaming charges due to PRL. Just because the employee is going to get a charge back doesn't mean they have the right to change it back if its before 6 months. AML codes are still in place and are still used. The cell phone industry is shady as it is. If i was the rep I would slap on the AML code so at least I dont get a major charge back!

actually so all of you know how this works, the smartchoice does have to remain active on the account if you receive the discounted pricing on the device regardless of anything else. if in 6 months you lose the phone or decide you want to go back to a NF/GF plan, you can't reason being that it should be explained at POS and noted in the account. If the plan gets changed from smartchoice within 60 days alltels revenue assurance team will come through and place you back on the previous smartchoice plan regardless of what handset you have active on the account. I have seen this happen much to often in past year. The smartchoice really offers a great package deal for the money but its up to the customer deciding to get on it whether they want to...
