Looking for new phone or service...where is Sprint/Nextel Going?

Currently out of contract with Cingular and desporately in need of a new phone (won't hold charge, shuts itself off, ect.). This thing's held up well over the 2 years of abuse that I've put it through but not the point.

I'd like to know, where specificaly Nextel/Sprint is headed in the next 6~12 months. I'm looking for GOOD to GREAT voice quality for phone calls, the buying nights that start @ 7 is attractive, and I don't text message (often) or use data (though I'd like to have access to that from time to time).

I've read several threads here about the dual mode CDMA (voice dat) and iDen (DC), but haven't dug up any concrete (not that I expect 100% set in stone items) time lines, or what that exactly means to the end user.

As far as good voice quality, from my experience CDMA is better. The dual mode phone is coming out in Oct., and if you get service now, you'd have to pay full price for it when it comes out later this year. The company is putting alot of their money into advancing the data portion of the phone. So if you intend to use your phone for email, internet, music, and any data applications, they would be a good choice for you. Hope this helps.

So...I guess the question becomes is it better to wait, or switch now and then upgrade service in oct? I need to make a move soon as my current phone is majorly sucking!

In all honesty, if you intend to get service with Sprint, I would say do it now. The phones that come out in Oct. will be very popular, meaning they may be hard to get, and since this is the first time any carrier has tried to make a cross platform phone like this, I'm certain the first few models will have glitches. So you would be better to wait untill later models come out and they have perfected the necessary technology. But if all you're looking for is good voice quality, the dual mode phones should'nt be that big of a deal, as CDMA generally has better quality. So don't be stuck with a bad phone, switch over 🙂

Do you need the direct connect feature? If not just sign up on the Sprint side. They have excellent voice quality. Plus you could always change to Nextel later without breaking your contract with Sprint.

Beyond the dual-mode phones, no one seems to know if iDEN will remain for Nextel Direct Connect or if they will replace their now instant walkie-talkie service with something that works as good on CDMA (I honestly don't think that will be accomplished, but only time will tell for sure). Most likely after the dual-mode phones come out, Sprint ReadyLink will cease to exist. Nextel DC is much, much, much better than Sprint RL. Now for voice and data, CDMA will be the primary choice, as iDEN voice isn't bad, but data certainly isn't the strong point for iDEN. Then again, when Nextel first started as Fleet Call, they were a dispatching company who had nothing to do with cellular phone service whatsoever. Basically, it boils down to this: Ei...

dual mode is still in trial and should be rolled out by late Q4, possiblely Q1 '07... it will consist of CDMA-PCS voice with iDEN walkie-talkie and EVDO net services. The handsets are still in production and made more for topline consumers (business/government/education/military) then individual consumers.

I beg to differ... it hasn't been released because it is still in trial in Schamburg IL (they haven't even finalised colour patterns), or it would have been released already. if it's not until Oct, that because it has to be approved by Sprint engineering and the FCC, thus a beta.. or trial... "yes we can" And like anything else OCT is not a set date.. it's a timeframe.. trust me late Q4 early Q1 07...

yea in 6-12 months sprint/nextel will be a powerful force to reckon with... the coverage will be improving and they will start bringing over nextel's assets over to the sprint network but very slowly... there would be ev-do REV O and soon A which will increase speeds to allow more applications to be used. there will be a dual mode phone coming out in october and in the 1st qt of 2007, enabling the user to use cdma for voice and data and iden for direct connect...

there will also be some nice goodies coming in the future; like tv devices and things of that nature..

hope that helps..
