Verizon Wireless says it sees crime in Nextel swap

WASHINGTON, June 29 (Reuters) - Verizon Wireless has told U.S. communications regulators that assigning airwaves to rival Nextel Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:NXTL - News) could open them to federal criminal charges, according to a letter the company released on Tuesday.
The Federal Communications Commission is weighing a plan in which Nextel would get airwaves in the 1.9 gigahertz band in exchange for giving up other spectrum, including in the 800 megahertz band where there is interference with public safety communications.
