T-Mobile Shareholders Demand Upswing

Profitability for the wireless carrier will likely come through acquisition or a public offering, but neither path is clear.

T-Mobile USA's top two shareholders want the wireless provider to be on the way to new profitability by the middle of next year -- or else -- according to the latest report of many swirling around the company.
Another option -- a perennial one -- would have T-Mobile's German parent Deutsche Telekom (NYSE: DT) acquire Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S), but that deal would be fraught with spectrum compatibility problems. Sprint uses CDMA while T-Mobile is building its network on Advanced Wireless

T-Mobile's answer is simple. Offer an unlimited talk and text plan for $49.99 to throw the other nationals for a loop. You'd have at least 1 quarter for the other guys to watch to see what happens. By that time you'll have poached enough customers that it won't matter what their reaction is.

Really, other than aggressive pricing there's not much TMO or Sprint can do to gain a lot of market share.

Lower rate plan does not equal profitability. Yes, it would add subs that would in turn make the company more money. But if you do a 50 dollar all inclusive plan all you are gonna do is bring ARPU to a max of 50ish bucks per sub. Right now many of T-mobile's customers have an ARPU well above that. The industry average is well above that too.

I do agree that it will be tough to do much to catch the big 2. I do see T-mobile being able to catch and pass Sprint. But it will take a tremendous effort.

Lower rate plans can equal profitability if you consider market phenomenas like the "walmart effect".

Also cellohone companies are almost as bad as oil companies purposely creating an inflation of value upon plans, eventually more people are going to become wiser (the younger generations) and not sign contracts and realize the many pre-paid services actually offer compartive alternatives to the big 4 monthly plans. This will become more establish as companies like Cricket, Metro, and even the surprisngly profitable iden network based Boost Mobile take large market shares, offering unlimited calling for as low as 40$.

The big 4 will be forced to offer competitive rates eventually.

It is not up to us, it is up to T-mobiles terrible marketing, and lack of targetting the correct demographics, and years of questionable coverage.
EI a couples months ago I am in down town Monteray Bay and me and my girl are both unable to make calls on my G1 or her BB 8900, this type of stuff in notexceptable.

People with money (post paid bill payers)have the ability to pay for quality even if it is more expensive. Why go with T mobile when you can go with Verizon ?

(I work for the company which is why I have their service and I regret giving up my sprint to be honest.)

Lets resurface a thread from 2 months ago. Every company has dead spots and areas to improve on. If you work for the company you would know this. Yes even Vzw.

Yes this is true, but obviously you would want to have a carrier with the least chance of drop/unable to connect problems.
I had sprint for 4 years never once was unable to make a call, with T-mobile I dont even get service in spots in my local mall, movie theater GF's house, and a spot in OUR OWN T-MOBILE STORE!!

I love t-mobile the company is excellent but lets not say it is okay to be a certain way because other carriers are also, the difference between t-mobile and other national carries in calling area is huge, not even comparible.

I highly doubt with having sprint you never had any problems. All carriers have problems at one point or another. Period. If you claim you haven't you're only lieing to yourself. Everyone else already knows it.

I've used Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T many moons ago. I also use MetroPCS for my business lines. Verizon dropped calls by the airport, but other than that, no problems. Metro PCS has a problem with sending some calls straight to voice mail, but it's rare. AT&T gave me no issues, but again we're talking many moons ago. I've never had an issue with Sprint, I never had an issue with T-Mobile.

Either we have a nation of whiners or I'm just lucky.
