Question about the MyTouch for your T-Mobile guys

I am an AT&T customer (iphone) and I am thinking about switching to T-Mobile because I have poor reception in my current place with AT&T and I am going to add to my parents unlimited plan ($30). One of the things that is important to me is the wifi calling ability that T-Mobile has with some of their phones. I know the Nokia 6301 has this. I am interested in the MyTouch 3G that will be out this week and want to know if it will have this feature. Because my area doesn't have the best of coverage it would be important to be able to make calls over wifi. Please help, many thanks!

Unfortunately, no, the MyTouch 3G will not have UMA (which is the ability to make calls over WiFi). It has 3G, and as of right now (and the forseeable future) there will not be a phone that combines both UMA and 3G technologies because the radios are too large to fit both, and they are both hard core battery hogs (or so I've heard from phone manufacturers). The MyTouch will have internet over WiFi, though, much like the G1.

One more, I like in SC, and it seems like T-Mobile only has 3G in their large markets. When will they be expanding to the rest of us peeps?

The MyTouch isn't out till August 5th. The presale begins on July 8th. I would go with the 8900. You have UMA and the BB App world. Its a great phone just doesn't have the touch screen.

i am sure you know your phone but i wonder why phone areana in their specs on it says it does, could it be uma ready and not activated, i am grasping at straws here to figure out why a pretty good cell site would be wrong.

I don't know how/why phone arena got it wrong, they're usually dead on. But I confirmed it with my HTC last month: HTC has no plans for any UMA phones for 2009. I'm not suprised though. The only UMA phone HTC has made is the Shadow. The new Shadow is a huge improvement over the original, but it has priced itself out of the picture.

According to HTC, UMA and 3G can't both work in the same phone. No 3G phone with T-Mobile has UMA. Probably just a typo.

While the MyTouch won't have UMA, (I wish it did), I can tell you that my wife's G1 gets decent reception in our home, while no other T-Mobile phone has. Even Nokias.

I have the Nokia UMA phone because I needed it in the home, but my guess is that with the MyTouch I won't.
