I made a mistake!!!

My family & I switched to T Mobile a few months back, one of the main reasons being to get the G1. Well, the one thing they did NOT tell me was that in order to have gotten the $199 price or whatever it was when it was released, I would had to have been a customer for 2 years. When I went onto the "get it now" website, I was surprised to see that the "best" price I could get it for was $299. Now, I get an e-mail yesterday saying "it's here". I clicked on the link, now the price is up to $349! Furthermore, I have an unlocked AT&T 8525, and as you all probably know, if you don't buy one of their phones, you can't get either 3G or send or receive MMS's. I'd have to spend the $349 or buy their p.o.s. Wing with a processor 50% slower than what I ...

I would think you could get you're 8525 to work with TMO's MMS.
Yes you'd be out of luck with TMO's odd ball 3G choice. But I had a unlocked ATT Tilt set up and working with TMO.
But it would seem TMO just isn't a real cellular provider. They've got some off the wall 3G band that their parent company doesn't even use not to mention the extremely small coverage thus far, all their phones seem a little toyish, and their international roaming rates are starting to be trumped by other US carriers.
Hey I had TMO for quite some time and they've got great customer service, great prices, and their service always seemed to work. But I guess I've just out grown them.

Oddball 3G choice? Off the wall? Do you actually think T-Mobile had a choice as to what spectrum band they could launch their 3G in? Do you think there's an unlimited amount of spectrum out there? You're not really that dense, are you?

haha, why are you angry again? you are trying to upgrade after 2 months of service. What company out there will let you do that? i've been with t-mobile for 6 years, i love them and would never switch. I'm also loving my G1 that I got for $179!

You're retarded. Of course you have to sign up for a contract if you want the discounted price for a phone, and otherwise you pay retail price. Go back to At&t, and whine. You'll never be a satisfied customer.

Why do you have to make a personal attack? I don't believe I ever said anything about signing or not signing a contract. I thought the point I made was that I already have one, but because of not having it for 2 years, I got a different deal? Chill, man.

This is why you switch when it comes out, not before. That way you take advantage of the discounted pricing. You've already received a phone at discount so why would T-Mobile give you another one with a full discount when you haven't met your contractual obligations yet? What cell phone carrier, including AT&T, would do this for a customer anyways? I think your expectations are unreasonable and you should seriously reconsider your argument. Also, think about this: By the time your current contract expires, even better 3G devices with T-Mobile will have launched so waiting is good option for you since you plan on waiting until the contract is over anyways. Make sense?

So if I go to Sprint, stay with them for ___ (insert any number of years here) I can get any phone for the best pricing whenever and as often as I want? If so, I'm going to be one happy Sprint customer in ___ (insert that same number of years here). EBay, here I come!

No. The carriers give you a discount on the phone with the start of a new contract. If you get a phone for $200 when you first sign up (or renew at the end of your current contract), the phone still costs the company probably around $350-$400 (do not give me the bulls*** "they only pay $4 for the phone" line). The bottom line is that it is still a business, so once the company makes up the money lost on the handset discount, you will get another full discount.

And no, no...

Thanks for the constructive input. I just switched from "internet2" to "wap", and the speed and everything else is just about the same. Does anyone know if 3G has actually rolled out in Philly? The coverage map seems to indicate it has, but I can't really tell.

Your current 3G handset uses different frequency bands than what T-Mobile HAS to offer. I say "HAS to" because they have no choice in what 3G frequency bands they're using. Spectrum is a limited commodity, which is received in two methods, generally speaking: 1. Buy a cell phone carrier that has spectrum and 2. Win spectrum in an FCC auction. That's it.
