Hold the phone with the back facing you and so the sony-ericsson lable is upside-down if your reading it.
Push/slide up from the my-favs paw-print looking thing with one thumb while your other thumb pushes down on the green icon.

thanks that didn't work so i took it to the store. after nearly 7 minutes the rep was able to get it off. wow they really put it on tightly huh.

the correct way to open is
put a thumb on the gap near Sony, press lightly, and slide the cover out
