Where the heck is 3g??

I know that a lot of you here on the forums have the same question, and although I know that many people have asked this question before in previous threads, I just want to know, what's with the hold up.

Didn't T-Mobile win all that specturm from the FCC bidding? I'm just frustrated because have been using my SDA since the first day it came out, and have seriously been tempted to either upgrade to the Dash or the Wing, but I just couldn't bring myself to it seeing that I know that as soon as I upgraded, 3g will be right around the corner.

Any reps who are REALLY in the know have any insight? It would be great, thanks in advance.

it is going to be a slow process for tmobile. However I think they will jump to 4g and skip 3g since they have not rolled it out at all and way behind!

Just cause they won spectrum doesn't mean that their network is up yet in many places to launch 3G. They will not jump to 4G, since 4G isn't even out yet. And no, Wi-Max is not 4G.

Wi-Max is not 4g. So I guess the experts in the wireless world are worng. Thank you for correcting them all. EVDO is 3g and Wi-Max is faster better and cheaper and can carry VOIP. How would that not make it 4g. Lets see 1x 2g evdo 3g wimax 4g? GSM, 1x 2g, edge 2.5g, UMTS/HSDA 3g.

Sprint doesn't even know what will be 4G. They are just using that as a ploy to get customer to run back to them. Sprint is losing so many customers. It would be funny to see how many people jump on their service. I am surprised Sprint can pay for Wi-Max.

I'm surprised AT&T hasn't done that yet. Although the surly agents that you have to talk when you call in are probably reason enough for most not to bother them.

if you roam more than 50% of your minutes, you may get fired

Wow, you must not know too much about the wireless industry. WiMAX is 4G, and Sprint's CDMA side isn't losing their custoemrs, it's the iDEN side.
What I'm really suprised is T-Mobile took so long to deploy 3G. T-Mo's 3G isn't going to blanket their network, it's going to take some time.
My honest opinion, Sprint offers more. T-Mo's great customer service is better than Sprint's, I'll give you that. I'm also impressed with HotSpot@Home

Oh, please. Just cause Sprint deems Wi-Max their 4G network, doesn't mean it will become a standard.

Thanks for replying, all you guys. Like the first person who responded said, skipping to 4G might be the only thing they can do to remain relativley competitve.

I hate the fact that their smartphones have the tendency to be so expensive, and I believe that they need to have more smartphones that are less expensive than say, AT&T. And does anyone know why they don't have any Treo's? A 750p would have been nice if they made one w/ wifi.

T-Mobile hates the Treo for some reason. I dunno why, but the main reason now it that we are contracted with HTC (High Tech Company) based out of Taiwan... They are a fairly new company.. so i think t-mo wanted to give them a chance.

Again there is only one country that is truly 3g. That is the one I am in now (japan). They run everything off WCDMA. Voice and data. In the states the G's seem to be based only off data. And that is fine but there seems to be no true definiation of what is 2g 3g 4g. Since Sprint has hinted they will run voice and data off wimax I beleive it is the next step in the g's for the US.

Just because Sprint wants to use that as a 4G network, doesn't mean that it will take off to become a true 4G network.

4g is not a specific technoligy. It will become sprint 4g. Now if verizon comes up with a differant technoligy that is as fast and does the same it will be verzion's 4g.

4G is an initialism of the term Fourth-Generation Communications System. A 4G system will provide an end-to-end IP solution where voice, data and streamed multimedia can be served to users on an "Anytime, Anywhere" basis at higher data rates than previous generations. No formal definition is set as to what 4G is, but the objectives that are predicted for 4G can be summarized as follows:

4G will be a fully IP-based integrated system of systems and network of networks achieved after the convergence of wired and wireless networks as well as computer, consumer electronics, communication technology, and several other convergences that will be capable of providing 100 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s, respectively, in outdoor and indoor environments with en...

I'd like to see what other phones will be out by T-Mobile. I know as far as their 3G network, it's slowly getting put up in NW Indiana. I noticed on some towers, they're overlaying their network with additional bays on their towers. I don't know if the AWS band must have their own bays, but that's how it's working out with upgrades to T-Mobile towers in NW Indiana. I don't know if I worded it right to where it's understandable.

Well that's good to hear, if they are indeed T-Mobiles Towers that are being constructed specifically for 3G purposes.

To the one who replyed that Japan is the only country who relies soley on 3G, you guys out there are so lucky that NTT DoCoMo understands why cellular technology is so wonderful and the features that they as a company provide only prove that point even more.

I bet that we will see an awful lot of Samsung support, as well as HTC support in terms of phones that would be specifically good for high speed data. And that BB 8820 would be a sweet phone for the @Home network, seeing that it has wifi and all, but unfortunatley, I bet that AT&T has already swept that one up 😢

but HTC phone is not the best for tethering
TI bluetooth chip sucks
this is not single case

Neevo, Broadcom, or CSR chip is way better!
sonyericsson and nokia phones are the best as modem

it depends on your market
NYC is one of the earlybird markets, and I'll get T639 about 2 weeks after it come out
this phone is NOT my primary phone, will use for detecting 3G, whenever I catch it, will post (I can tell it easily, when the bitrate on slingplayer displays any value more than 220kbps, I get 3G
if you want 3G pda phone (with AWS support), I think you have to wait till next year (3.6Mbps HSDPA is sweet enough?)

I know with Gary Indiana being part of the Chicago market, T-Mobile has a total of 30mhz to work with in the AWS band. They have a 10mhz D or E block, plus a 20mhz A or B block, due to being outbidded on the Great Lakes Region F Block to Verizon Wireless. But for where...
