Mobile email (always checks, even at 4am)

jimpop

😡 I recently found out that any configured Mobile Email account is periodically checked for new email. And, if you get an email at 4am, the Razor v3i will notify you by beeping. This is a pain in the a**, and seems like a bad way to program software. I want to be able to check my email with the Razor, when I want to, but not when I'm asleep. And I certainly don't want my phone waking me in the middle of the night when someone in Asia sends me an email. Has anyone found a way to disable this nuisance while still being able to check email with your phone?

I know with sprint if you log into your account online you can turn on or off email notification through your phone. I am sure cingular would have something similar?

:-) One would hope so, but unfortunately not. I can't say that this is Cingular's fault, probably more so the person who wrote the Mail applet. Still, at the end of the day, Cingular is selling a phone with stupid software on it. You have 2 options: Check email and be notified 24 hours a day of a new email, OR don't check email on the Razor V3i.

How about choosing the "dont check email" option when you get ready to go to bed......??

"How about choosing the "dont check email" option when you get ready to go to bed......??"

There is no "dont check email" option... you are confusing "Mobile Email" with the POP3/SMTP capabilities of the phone. "Mobile Email" is an applet that provides integration with Yahoo/AOL/MSN/Bellsouth email services, whereas WAP POP3/SMTP is a standard interface to let you simply pull/push email. "Mobile Email" is more feature rich, it is an integration with the provider (i.e. filters/folders/spam-reporting/addressbook/et c)

Surely if you put your phone on silent while you sleep, it will not make any noise while in the silent mode.

Correct. But, if a sick family member needs to call me, or there is an emergency at work, then I won't hear the phone ring. Also, since I periodically travel, I have relied on my cellphone Alarm Clock for years now, using only it. So silent mode breaks everything I need from my cellphone while I am asleep.

Well silent wont break the alarm feature, it will still alarm. My friends w810 never makes an audible sound when she receives email via mobile email. It just lights up. For the price, the Sony w810 just cant be beat.

One would hope so, but alas not on Cinguar phones. Cingular has reported to me that NONE of their current phones allows for you to turn off notifications when using the "Mobile Email" applet they ship on the phones. Just to be clear, Mobile Email is an applet on the phone that integrates with a pre-determined list of service providers (MSN/Yahoo/AOL/Bellsouth), it is not the same as setting your WAP phone up to pull/push via POP3/SMTP. Mobile Email includes the features defined by the service provider (Spam-reporting/Folders/Filters/etc).

I have yet to find a Series 60 phone that doesn't allow you to pick a notification(or lack of notification) for the email client built into the OS. you can even stop auto retrieval. Look into the E62. its a much better phone anyways..the razr is a POS

I do miss the Nokia phones I've had in the past, at least I miss the feature-richness and their durability. My past Motos were company provided, and I went through five v551s in 2 years. :-) I'm tough on phones.

> the razr is a POS

I am slowing finding that out.

Thanks.

Sorry to be harsh, but your dumb! Under ring details in all motorola phones you can set the email alert to silent so it wont bother you when you sleep. Or even change the PROFILE to silent when you dont want to hear your phone. I honestly hope you do not take offense to me calling you dumb it was meant to be facecious not taken personally. These are things that any competent sales-person should have informed you of when helping you set your phone up to receive email. If you did this on your own try visiting a store when you want to set things up like this. Good salesman can come in handy for all kinds of information. 😁

> Sorry to be harsh, but your dumb!

No offense taken, I've been called worse before.

Looking at my Razor V3i settings, as I have many times in the past few days, I see these ring settings:

Settings -> Audio -> Vibe & Ring Detail ->

Ring Volume: 4
Calls: cq (custom ring tone)
IM: Continental
Messaging: caribe1 (custom ring tone)
Voicemail: Attention
Alarms: caribe1 (custom ring tone)
Data Calls: Continental
Fax Calls: Silent
Ringer IDs: On
Key Volume: 1
Reminders: Beep

I hear what you are saying, but my phone says otherwise. ;-) And, as I've said earlier, if I turn my phone off I will miss out on other features.

Still, thanks for trying to help.

yes so please listen closely

1. get yourself psyched and place the phone on your desk opened

2. get the nearest heavy object weighing in at least 10lbs and repeated bash the phone

3. put the remaining contents in a waste receptical

4. buy yourself a qulaity phone this time try a Nokia or Sony Ericsson

Email, IM, WAP, camera, video, cellular, txtmsg. I also like the Razor since it's a flip phone and I am less likely to scratch the main screen while throwing the phone around (airport TSA checks, nightstand, counter top, pockets, etc.)

This is the way the razr v3i is also. Log into email account and hit menu button for options, scroll down to email alerts, select and choose disabled. It will not alert upon receipt of new emails.

I truly believe you, but in the past I haven't seen this option despite checking multiple times. 😎 I am trying to login to my configure Yahoo! account, via Mobile Email, however the system must be stalled as my phone (for the past 4 hours) is reporting that it cannot connect "Communication eror. (20) Please try again later". However, since it is a recently re-created Mobile Email entry, the phone is still periodically beeping to tell me that I have new mail... hopefully the system/server will start working again before 4am so that I can once again try and see if that option exists. Thanks!

This is starting to SUCK. Now that I have a suggestion from cingulargaltx, on how to disable the notification, I can't login to the Mobile Email applet. I consistently get "Communication error (20).", this has been happening all day. YET, the damn phone keeps telling me I have new mail. 😁
