What if you die...with Cingular?
My spouse died unexpectedly and the billing was not in my name; I HAD signed the original sales agreement and equipment agreement with an agent for Verizon. I live in a community property state and am the sole heir to everything my spouse had.
I foolishly called to change the name on the account and report the death and was told I'd have to sign a NEW contract, even though technically I didn't have a contract (1 yr. expired 3 yrs. ago and I was month-to-month). I didn't want to be tied into an early termination fee again, since I was already considering Cingular; and I wanted to keep the account active long enough to port my numbers.
To make matt...

Now this is with the old TDMA phones as the GSM have to have a new account built under your name as i understand it but it still takes no more effort on your part just a little more time while we type in the computer đ. Wonder who is going to change with the merger? Probably change to cingular's way of things.
Looking back, that's what I should have done was just stop paying since it would have been on a dead person's credit record, not mine. Or just kept quiet and kept the account.
That was another thing that was strange is Verizon didn't even want a death certificate when "I" offered it, they never asked. I even offered up my Letters Testamentary, and I don't even think they knew what that was. đ
Glad to have them behind me and be with Cingular now. đ All I can do now is spread the word about Verizon and hope others don't have to go through the hell I've been through. đĸ
Just like you say, I couldn't understand why they just couldn't do it over the phone; it's not like I was trying to run away from paying the bill.
Once I received the contract they wanted me to sign, just to do a name change, it stipulated that the account had to be paid current. By that time, I had my $400 surprise, and no income with which to pay it off. It took me 7 mos. to finally pay it clear, and by then they canceled me without notice. âšī¸ Nice folks! đŋ
Well I thought they were being unreasonable; I had a small problem with the name change for my electric company, but the PUC handled that for me. đ Unfortunately, the PUC only handles landlines in my state.
I just thought it was a terrible way to treat a widow who was willing to keep the contract and keep paying. Guess I should have just stopped paying since you can't get money from a dead person. đ
I wish I had been with Cingular then, too. So far, they seem friendlier and not as pushy on their sales. đ
