What if you die...with Cingular?

I've just been through more-than-hell with Verizon--was with them for over 4 years!

My spouse died unexpectedly and the billing was not in my name; I HAD signed the original sales agreement and equipment agreement with an agent for Verizon. I live in a community property state and am the sole heir to everything my spouse had.

I foolishly called to change the name on the account and report the death and was told I'd have to sign a NEW contract, even though technically I didn't have a contract (1 yr. expired 3 yrs. ago and I was month-to-month). I didn't want to be tied into an early termination fee again, since I was already considering Cingular; and I wanted to keep the account active long enough to port my numbers.

To make matt...

i am sorry about your wifes passing and your troubles. Here is they way we would handle that situation.Cingular based on conection with the lawyer handling your wifes passing would have aloud you to chage it over to your name. Mind you this would have taken time and effort on your part. The new owner of the account assumes phones rate plans and CURRENT contracts. Being you where out of contract then the new owner would remain that way until of coarse a rate plan change. I am sorry you went through what you did. I wish now you were with Cingular at the time and we could have made the transition smoother, time consuming yet smoother> You must remember that by law the account is tied to a social and a credit rating so the law must be processed c...

Mmm...that is very interesting. Here at AWS if your spouse (only if it is your legal spouse) passes away and you call and tell us that you have the option of Canceling without ETF (no matter the contract) or we will change it to your name and your SSN with no credit check right away. Takes about 90 seconds (180 if the system is being pigish).

Now this is with the old TDMA phones as the GSM have to have a new account built under your name as i understand it but it still takes no more effort on your part just a little more time while we type in the computer 😛. Wonder who is going to change with the merger? Probably change to cingular's way of things.

You are over looking the fact that whether it be TDMA or Gsm the Customer wanted no contract in order to port. UUUUMMMMM Tdma or GSM? Contract on GSM? that sounds like discrimination to me. I contract is a contract reguardless of technology. Or no contract for that matter.

A contract is a contract unless there are promotional features... that's what ties in the contract for us. If you want a no commitment, you get no mobile to mobile. I always tell my customers who ask about death just to stop paying. Are they going to collect on a corpse? I know marriage makes things different, but we switch it over with a death certificate (which i really want for myself, i'd frame it and put it on my wall)

My old non-contract with Verizon didn't have mobile-to-mobile, or "In" or whatever they call it.

Looking back, that's what I should have done was just stop paying since it would have been on a dead person's credit record, not mine. Or just kept quiet and kept the account.

That was another thing that was strange is Verizon didn't even want a death certificate when "I" offered it, they never asked. I even offered up my Letters Testamentary, and I don't even think they knew what that was. 🙄

Glad to have them behind me and be with Cingular now. 😁 All I can do now is spread the word about Verizon and hope others don't have to go through the hell I've been through. đŸ˜ĸ

Yes, it is interesting. I don't really know what their policy is, or if I was just talking to a bunch of unqualified employees. 🙄

Just like you say, I couldn't understand why they just couldn't do it over the phone; it's not like I was trying to run away from paying the bill.

Once I received the contract they wanted me to sign, just to do a name change, it stipulated that the account had to be paid current. By that time, I had my $400 surprise, and no income with which to pay it off. It took me 7 mos. to finally pay it clear, and by then they canceled me without notice. ☚ī¸ Nice folks! đŸ‘ŋ

Thanks for your condolences; it was my hubby. đŸ˜ĸ

Well I thought they were being unreasonable; I had a small problem with the name change for my electric company, but the PUC handled that for me. 😉 Unfortunately, the PUC only handles landlines in my state.

I just thought it was a terrible way to treat a widow who was willing to keep the contract and keep paying. Guess I should have just stopped paying since you can't get money from a dead person. 😎

I wish I had been with Cingular then, too. So far, they seem friendlier and not as pushy on their sales. 🙂
