Cingular Service in NYC

Hi all,

Can any Cingular users in the Manhattan and/or Queens area give me some feedback on the quality of their calls - reception, signal strength, clarity, etc...

I used to be an AT&T user and have been using Verizon for the past few years. I like Verizon, but Sony Ericsson phones are tempting me to switch to a GSM network.

Thanks in advance!

Why would you ever go from Verizon to Cingular/AT&T, the sound quality and technology with Verizon is better than w/Cingular/AT&T.

Also dont believe those commercials that say Cingular has the fewest dropped calls, they actually have the most dropped calls, perhaps in the future Cingular will get better, They are upgrading to WCDMA it is b...

Because it might work better for her. Test it out and see if it might work better for you. If so, switch, if not stick with VZ.

Wow, you have to be an idiot to believe all that. First of all, there is no one size fits all cellular service out there. For instance, Verizon doesn't have as good of call clarity in our market cingular is much better. Cingular works in our basement, verizon doesn't. Consumer reports doesn't poll every cellular market, they only poll a small percentage. The report that claims cingular has the fewest dropped calls polled 10 times as many markets as the crap consumer reports did.

first of all who are you calling an idiot, if you disagree with me say it, I have used both . Cingular sound quality sucks compared to Verizon where I live which happens to be where this person was asking about (queens, NYC), dropped calls also are much worse with Cingular. who is the independent firm that did these tests for dropped calls? where were tests conducted, you can make almost any test say anything you want to if you set it up the way you want, why don't you go and ask people that have had both services which they prefer. Also so you don' think I have any kind of Bias here I just left Verizon this week and I have to pay 2 ETF charges. If you must know the why I left Verizon it has to do with PTT, if you are anymore interested do s...

wombough I think you have read all my posts about PTT, since you commented on all of them, yes I went back to Nextel (hybrid phone this time). Then again I was not referring to you in my previous post, I was referring to chainsaw!

Ok, sorry I get a little worked up sometimes. The firm was telephia. You made it sound like you were talking about nationwide not queens. Cingular sounds quality does suck...with some of the phones we sell, thats why I refuse to sell samsung and lg.

I have not tried every single brand of phone sold by Cingular so I cant say what if any difference it would make, perhaps what you said is true, I'm not sure what different Cingular phones I have tried, as far as with Verizon, I know I have used Motorola, LG, Samsung's, all of therm pretty much sounded the same as with sprint and or Nextel I used Motorola's and Sanyo's on CDMA network sound was excellent, on IDEN network sound left something to be desired, as far as the current hybrid phone everything seems excellent currently phone calls are clear and PTT on IDEN sounds clearer than what I have been previously used to.

yeah I don't like iden voice either. Like them as much as GSM. But was just suggesting as PTT seemed important and no one can argue that they have the best PTT!

That is the reason why I left Verizon, They were supposed to be re-releasing PTT in addition to EVDO Rev. A, according to them they no longer have any future plans to do this and this is the reason why I left, Of course Sprint is supposed to be releasing PTT w?Qchat early next year on their EVDO Rev. A netword and according to what I have read they have latency down to under a second, If this is actually true I should be pretty happy. Regardless of any of this it doesn't amswer the original question about Cingular and Verizon.

true but I think we answered it. He or she needs to try it themselves. And verizon has to develope something like qchat as Nextel had the sole rights to which sprint obtained in the merger.

Well I have had numberous conversations with Verizon employees and technicians and they all say there are currently no plans to bring PTT back with EVDO Rev. A, Perhaps in the future that will change only god and Verizon know, And neither of them are talking.

All these claims are a bunch of hoopla. My roomate had verizon and I could hardly understand him. I ported him to cingular and it his calls are now clear as day. But then I have heard the same thing happening the other way. I think that whatever works for you is the best option there are too many variables to make concrete claims.

If you get a Sony Ericsson phone (that has GSM850), you'll pretty much get Cingular at it's best. If even that doesn't work out, stay with Verizon.

Just get Cingular with a new number and if it works out, you can port the number later.
