AT&T -> Cingular, not keeping number, upgrade or new customer?

We've currently got an old AT&T family plan. We were living in New York until I got a new job and we moved to Boston last year. At the time we were told we couldn't switch to a local number without also switching to a Cingular plan, and there's no comparable plan for a comparable price. Plus we'd be moving around for a while, and then planned a wedding and didn't want to be changing phone numbers in the middle, etc... Now it's finally time to change, and time to bite the bullet and pay more for the same service.

I looked through the plans at cingular.com, saw the deals on phones, and have an idea of what I want. In order to do this, I claimed to be a new customer. I also wanted to see if there were any promotions, so I called custo...

Well if you 'migrate/upgrade' over to cingular you will have the 'upgrade' fee waived because you are a former att customer. New customers as well as upgrading customers have the same pricing on cingular's site as well as in corporate stores. There really is no benefit for you to close your att account, and begin a cingular account brand new.

You can 'migrate/upgrade' right on the cingular site as long as your comfortable in doing so.

Actually, I'm more comfortable using the site than dealing with someone on the phone, but when I clicked on the "change rate plan" link, it churned and frothed for a while before giving me a message saying I couldn't do it online and I had to call customer service to do it by phone. I suppose I can go through the excercise online, and then phone in with the cart items I end up choosing...

You could do that. If they do not want to honor the prices online, ask to speak to a supervisor. (be polite) Often telesales doesn't have the same pricing as online, but it can be matched (most of the time).

I don't recall them going out of business I recall a merger. That is like saying nextel went out of business!

nextell and sprint merged by exchanging stock.

ATT wireless was bought out. That's going out of business.

no only when you are bankrupt. They were doing just fine. If the FCC allowed Dish to buy Directv would that of meant they went out of business even if they were successful when they were bought!

There's a store across the street selling their business. They're not bankrupt, but they're trying to get out of the business.

ATT Wireless was done, because they weren't profitable. They were losing money. They bailed out because they couldn't keep themselves afloat.

You cetainly could be correct.. however I have 2 questions... 1: Do you have a link to the financials for the previous year prior to the merger and 2: How big of a money loser do you pay 42BLN for? Just curious.

You pay that kind of money to obtain their valueable assets. Those assets have been very instrumental to the recent success of Cingular.

you mean the 4 cities with UMTS from the NTDComo investment? for a modest gain in spectrum? Seems a steep price.. 🙄

modest gain 😳

you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. that spectrum is what is allowing for Cingular to roll out HSDPA services to the majority of the major markets. also, if the gains were modest (as you suggest), why did the feds have them sell off large chunks before approving the merger. lets post about things we know to be fact instead of fanboy emotional posting 🙄

Wow.. Let me see if I get this straight.. it was a huge gain but they had to sell off and I quote you-"Large chunks" before the merger was approved?.. hmm.. I'm quite sorry I haven't kept up with the relative differences between "huge" and "large" chunks..

..I get there was some gain from the merger however any particular entity can only own so much spectrum in a given market..how much overlap was there between the 2 networks? 70%? Was ATT gunning for that killer nebraska market during thier existence? while Cingular was only serving the blue states? Did Cingular double the total spectrum? Thats huge.. Gaining anything less than 30% would be considered modest with a >40Bn pricetag.. if they did gain a net of over 30% then great..
Pleas...
