Number change charge

Can someone please tell me why Cingular charges $36.00 to change your phone number? 😳

Because they can.
I'm not trying to be a smart@ss, but that's really all there is to it. They aren't going to do something for free if it causes anyone any work (those people are all paid). I don't think that's an unreasonable price.

If you're just changing your number for the heck of it then you should be charged. If you are changing your number cause you gave it out to the wrong people then you should be charged. If you are getting obscene or unnecessary phone calls and it is not a result of you giving out your number, then you should not be charged. If you are moving to a different area then you should not be charged.

Call Customer Service and you won't be charged. Stores can't waive the charge so you gotta do it through CS.

Sorry, I meant CS can waive the charge. You just gotta give them a good reason.

I live in the SF CA area. I added a line to my family share plan and they gave me this number with a prefix about 20 miles from here. If I call mobile to mobile no problem, but if you call from your home phone, then everytime it causes a toll call. I explained this to Cingy CS but they stil charged me $35 for doing this, their solution to just use your cell phone to call this person, that means everyone who ever calls that number has Cingular too?

That's wrong. Either that rep wasn't trained right or you did this before Cingular implemented "The Customer Rules."

How long ago did this happen? If it was recent enough, you may be able to get a credit.

They don't if you call CS and give a good reason. Change it at a store and you can forget about getting it for free.

you can call in after the fact, but it's true that stores can't waive the fee. It's automatically put on when we clicky the button.

Im not 100% sure on this but you think all these phone numbers carriers get are free? I think they have to pay for them in big blocks. Im sure some of you may have heard of Type 1 and Type 2 numbers when portability came out but the carrier purchases huge chunks of numbers. So these numbers aren't free and this is a way of recooperating the costs. Feel free to correct me if Im wrong anyone.

I doubt they made money on buying a bulk of numbers because not everyone gets a number change and gets charged for it as mentioned earlier. But im pretty sure it doesnt cost the carrier $36 a number lol. They may get some of it back but not enough to cover the entire expense of "buying" more numbers.

Well the point of the hole forun is that I think its BS. They are the only carrier out there is seems to be charging for this. I think the majority agrees. Sorry but thats some BSlingular

No, T-Mo charges $15 for a number change. The reason T-Mo does it is b/c something specific happens when you change a mobile number (I don't want to make it public what it is) and some people realized it, and abused it, changing their number a few times a month. BAAAAAAAAAAD people, ruining it for everyone else. 👿

actually i know quite a few carriers that charge for # changes....my company charges 25.00 and the first one is free....

It is not an automatic charge to change a number, even in a store. At least not in my store. The rep has to select a reason code. If that reason code is "procedural" rather than "customer request" the number change will not be charged for. I personally think it's ridiculous to charge for a number change; but it's company policy to charge for this. However, if you talk to the right person, you can get it done with no charge. I would think that most reps wouldn't charge you if you want to change it because you're getting harassing phone calls...

The best way for you to avoid the charge is switch carrier...
verizon and U.S. Cellular have some killer deals for new customers.. and i know for a fact (since i work for them) that USCC doesn't charge for up to two number changes a year, so if you wanna change your number just cuz you feel like it, you can!!!

True ..but those companies don't offer nites @ 7pm... which is more important to me. Why doesn't VZ offer nites @ 7.

Go ask the Verizon forum that one.

As far as the number change goes, it can be done for free for excessive wrong numbers, abusive calls, moving, wrong prefix assigned, things like that. I have never had an instance where a few was charged or at least not credited for the above circumstances.

If you just want to change it you will pay like virtually every other carrier. This is not just Cingular charging this fee.
