Costs when you cancel within 14 days

I bought my SE T637 phone on a Friday and I tried to return it on Monday. They were having computer problems and I ended up returning it on Tuesday. I had 25 minutes of talk time. I did call Cingular on Monday and say the phone was being returned to cancel my service and I would be retuning it to the store.

I ended up with a bill being mailed to my house about a week later. It was for $80.

$39.95 for the service
$25 ish for activation (I think, I don't have the bill with me right now)
$7 for the online web service (which was supposed to be free for 30 days)
$3 for the roadside assistance, which I didn't want but was free for 60 days and he just added it on before I knew it.
$x for taxes and such.

This all added up to about ...

WHOA!!

I thought Cingular did the same as VZW does for billing in this situation.

You have to pay the activation fee. That is of course non-refundable.. but I was darn sure that you would only pay for the airtime you used??? You had to pay for free services? What the heck?

Cingular CSR's can you confirm this? Ideas?

Yeah, I thought it was the same, too. I'm assuming that the bill Ducatiboy got was for the first months' service, and that they'll prorate it. I know VZW just makes you pay for airtime used, not the whole thing.

All he will be responsible for is the airtime used and activation.
