Massive 3G Rollout

Anxiovert

Jun 9, 2006, 8:39 PM
Did anyone read the news on 3G on the home page? It mentions October as when Cingular will release more 3G markets. From what I understand this sounds like it's gonna be a massive roll out. What do you guys think? 😎

If you are in NYC you might want to consider a 3G phone. NYC has just released 3G, so those phone are available there. Well, you said that you are not a data user so this may not mean a lot to you.
Damn! I wish i had 3G where I live! 😡

Users in many areas have been disappointed by the performance of video over EDGE, which reportedly hasn't provided much of a boost over GPRS speeds in many regions. Cingular is asking all national resellers to return their stock of 3G handsets until it launches 3G nationwide a second time in October

meaning that because it COMPLETELY SUCKS CINGUALR WILL TRY TO GET IT RIGHT IN OCTOBER. MEANING SAME B.S.

Anxiovert – I think you were trying not to go there, but I have to.

TmoRep514 – You are an IDIOT! As a customer care rep that claims to know everything, (according to your profile), I’m glad you work for other company.
Its kinda sad when people latch on to the media and re distribute information that some tool got wrong in the first place or wasn’t very clear. Much like the article you cut and pasted.
As someone who works in the industry, and not the general public, I would hope that you could understand what is being said in that story.. It had nothing to do with 3G sucking or being redeployed. (as you state)
Oh and by the way, EDGE and 3G are two different things. Idiot…

3G doesn't equal EDGE... so what your saying doesn't make any sense.

Company stores haven't been selling 3G phones unless they are located in a 3G area. The national retailers (walmart, bestbuy, target) have been selling them because they're greedy and just wanted to make a buck on a new product.

Cingular video doesn't work correctly in EDGE.. DUH!! it's a 3G technology, hence, the release with 3G markets.

I've actually used a 3G phone in an EDGE area, and I must admit it is faster than any other phone i've used. However, I realized at the time that it wasn't going to be UMTS speeds when I put my sim card into it. Do you honestly think by using a 3G phone you'll get UMTS speeds magically?? Get with the program and if you ...

I totally agree buddy!

I am also in an EDGE market and using the Samsung ZX-10 (3G Phone) that I won in a sales contest. I was shocked when I saw how fast the video and data speeds were without a 3G connection. Honestly, I didn’t think the Cingular Video was going to work in an EDGE market. 3G is going to be HUGE when it is finally rolled out!

I doubt it -- our 3G rollout has been so sluggish and inept so far I doubt it will truly be "massive". But then again, to our engineers perhaps an additional 15 cities over the 15 we have now would be "massive" since that would double our existing lame coverage. It is really sad when Cingular's main competitor, Verizon, has 3G coverage in our headquarters city (Atlanta) but Cingular does not. Verizon's 3G coverage also covers about 150 million people while ours only covers about 20 million. 👿

I have a 3G question for any 3G experts -- is it true that UMTS will only fall back to the GPRS network and not to EDGE?

EDGE/GPRS same thing... EDGE is just a software enhancement ontop of the existing GPRS.....
EDGE and GPRS work hand in hand.

No it's not true. EDGE is the backup system and when there isn't a UMTS signal, the phone will default to EDGE settings.

However, if you go into an EDGE area, then back to a UMTS area, you'll have to restart the cingular video to get the UMTS speeds again.
