Edge data failures

I live in Central, MI and I have been noticing that when I go home sometimes I will have GPRS data with full signal and other times I will go home and have Edge data and almost no signal at all. I have a W600 and it has been doing this ever since I got it about 4 months ago. The frequency of the occurrence is quite sporadic, sometimes happening four out of seven days in the week and other times I could go for two weeks without it happening. Any suggestions?

I had the w600i for a week or so. And noticed this too, especially as soon as I took it out of my pocket (no EDGE) I'd wait a bit and magically it'd come back after a few seconds out of the pocket. I thought it was weird. I never liked that phone that much anyway, so I exchanged it for a SLVR.

I, however, do like the phone and do not have to option right now to upgrade. You wouldn't have that same problem with the SLVR because it isn't Edge capable. The problem actually started with my s710a and I returned it for warranty exchange and received the w600i in its place, which has the same problem.

I would imagine that maybe there are two towers in your area, one with GPRS packet data and one with EDGE data. When you connect to the EDGE tower it could be farther away, giving you weaker signal. But the GPRS equipped tower could be closer, but not as fast giving you the good signla but slow data. Just a guess.

I'm going to have to agree with Ash here. If it happened with 2 different phones it's a matter of tower placement. The phone will try to hold on to the EDGE connection if it can, but once it loses the connection it takes the GPRS because it's stronger.

in your area you are probably hitting a roaming partner tower that hasn't upgraded to EDGE yet... all of Cingular's towers have been upgraded to EDGE...

A bit of side info is that I have noticed with Sony phones is that signal and ...
