Upgrading phone- Can I keep my old phone?

gh200200

Mar 1, 2006, 4:37 PM
I have done 2 upgrades and both times I have done them at an authorized dealer not a corporate store. Both times I had to give them my old phone. I was wondering if it is required that I give them my old phone or can I keep it? I would like to keep my old phone in case my new one breaks. Do you have to turn in the old phone at a corporate store? I am in southern cali 818 area code if that helps.
Thanks for your help

Sounds like the agents are ripping you off and re-selling your used phones. I hope they at least gave you a trade-in credit.

You're never REQUIRED to give up your old phone when doing an upgrade. We offer a trade-in credit at my store, but I've never heard of anyone forcing customers to give up their old phone.

Before immediately jumping on the dealers as shady perhaps you were given a discount for your old phone as a trade.

i will generally offer someone a few accessory's or a few bucks off an upgrade for the old phone so i can then use it as a loaner or for someone who cant afford a new replacement for a broken phone.

If the phone is in working order I do the same.

I would be willing to bet the person who originally posted got a deal for his trade in and didn't realize that fact.

Yes you can! however if you want to take part in cingular's new plan offers you will have to get a new phone, even if you buy a gsm phone online like ebay or something you will have to renew your plan to take part in there new offers. if for some reason you are using their old tdma service you cant keep your old plan with new service promotions with out changing you plan which means buying new phone

What does this post mean? This has nothing to do with the original question...

Just because you get a new phone doesn't mean you have to give up your old phone...

Shouldn't the person helping him make it clear to him that he would be receiving any benefit from it?

I'm more inclined to think it was shadey considering the rep did not make it clear to gh200200 that he was receiving any type of benefit.

You again?

Considering many stores have items posted in PLAIN VIEW IN LARGE TEXT and we go over it with them in the store (activations fees, first months bill, etc.) I am still amazed at the number of people coming back in to say "You never told me that".

We show them where we told them and they most often say "Oh yeah" and say thanks.

So STFU pooky bear.

Well then, it will be insteresting to see gh200200's response then.

I know people don't always pay the best attention, however, they generally remember when they save money or pay less then they normally would have.

Oh really, based on what?

I see people everyday who don't pay attention and don't remember when I show them they are saving something.

Both times I did my upgrades I did them with the same dealer. Both times I gave him my old cell phone, he switched the SIM card to the new phone. He did not tell me anything about the old phone. Both times he gave me the best deal I could find for the phone. He also gave me a ear piece, car charger and a phone case. SO i don't know if he gave them to me because I gave him my old phone.

Did he remember you the second time you came in? Maybe he mentioned it the first time around and remembered you the second time.

Either way, it sounds like you got a hell of a deal.

Based on what? We do not know how much he was charged for upgrading. He stated he got a good deal on the price of the phone, but is that all he paid for? It's unclear to me.

I am just curious why the rep would not make it clear to him that he was being extremely accommodating. I would think a sales rep would appreciate the opportunity to make themselves look good in the eyes of the customer for possible referrals.

Once again, finding trouble where none exists. This guy clearly is happy with the price he paid for the phone and received 3 free accessories.

Quit your bitching and moaning and stop looking for trouble and butting in when none exists.

Once again you fail to ask the right questions and feel threatened when they are asked.

Like I said:

Enjoy your Kool-aid.

How long are your arms? You sure do reach an awful lot. Do you get tired reaching so often?

He never said he thought he got a bad deal. He said he got the lowest price on the phone after looking around. He said he ALSO received 3 free accessories. Using logic we can deduce that going elsewhere would have cost him more and we can speculate that he would not have received 3 free accessories elsewhere.

Using your logic he possibly paid a $100 activation fee because all companies screw people over. He also MUST be unhappy since no one can be happy with their purchase as long as YOU are unhappy.

You are the king of kool-aid.

You have absolutely no basis for your argument.

Without revealing how much you paid, do you remember if the total cost would seemingly include any of those accessories?

I ask because I was unsure if by give you meant free of charge or included in the package as some type of add-on.

Capt Plooky,
The things that gh200200 stated he recieved when he upgraded (earpiece, car charger, etc) seem to lead more towards the fact that he got a good deal.
The real facts here are that you are a corporate employee and many of you always want to make negative remarks about Agents. If he got a handsfree kit (even a basic one), a car charger and a leather case that has to have a value of ATLEAST $40.00. Probably much more in your fancy corporate store. Unfortunatly you do not have the authority to offer FREE accessories at corporate like we do as Agents.
Agents are able to offer a better deal to customers 99% of the time because we do not have to follow the "corporate rules" and therefore many of the corporate reps make underhande...

While pooky bear is truly an idiot, he certainly is not a corporate employee (unless you know him personally. If you do please enlighten us). He does constantly bash Cingular, adding to problems others may experience and creating problems when none exist (including this current fishing trip he is taking).

Classic, absolutely classic.

🤣

He does constantly bash Cingular, adding to problems others may experience and creating problems when none exist (including this current fishing trip he is taking).

Doesn't Cingular do a good enough job of creating their own problems? Is it typical of you to blame your problems on someone? With all the problems of Cingular I find it quite amusing you have the audacity to point the finger at someone else instead of admitting fault.

(including this current fishing trip he is taking).

Yes, because we all know that asking questions ...

Please, Mr. link man, please find the post where I said Cingular was perfect. Please find the post where I said Cingular is bar none the best Wireles carrier everywhere in every facet of their offerings.

I know you enjoy wasying time, considering you allegedly called Cingular customer service (you still refuse to answer my questions on that post as well) so waste your time looking for those.

"Mr. Customer, you said you thought you received a good deal on your purchase AFTER shopping around first to compare prices. BUT, are you sure you didn't get screwed? Come on, everyone else does."

Is that the question you would like me to ask?

Hmm.. I'm a corporate employee, in a company store. I have rarely made bad comments about agents, unless I have witnessed them first hand. True, i'm not in love with agents, I also do not attack them randomly.

O, and yes, I do have the authority to offer free accessories, and, to top it off, my store matches any agent, including walmart, bestbuy and radioshack for prices on phones.

As far as us taking phones, we do not take a customer's phone even if the intention is to donate it. We have a sheet printed up (that we give to anyone who wants to donate their phone) that has donation locations for them to donate it themselves. This way, no customer feels burned by "having" to turn in their phone.

There is nothing in the rules that says you must give up your phone.

More than likely, since it's not a company store, they are either using your phone, or reselling it to another customer for a lil profit of the sales person...

Never, ever give up your old phone. You paid for it, you keep it.
