Question regarding WCDMA

ShadowScorpion

I see on the Cingular page of Phone Scoop that it has begun to deploy WCDMA technology. A question the pops into my mind: will WCDMA still use SIM cards, or will the phone need to be programmed, just like a CDMA?

Yes, UMTS will still use sim cards. Taking that aspect away from phones would be taking away one of the best advantages GSM has over CDMA.

True. Programming CDMA phones is bloody annoying... UMTS almost seems like a dream technology. The commodity of SIM cards, and hopefully, the astounding quality of CDMA.

Yes, and I think that is truly what Cingular is trying to achieve with this technology. It'll be exciting and interesting after the entire network is overlayed with UMTS/HSDPA.

And it'll also be quite a kick in the buttocks of CDMA carriers... hehe! Take that, Verizon!

At what point are CDMA and GSM supposed to merge? I forgot what the road map looks like, but a couple generations down the road, they become the same thing right? using WCDMA is the first step for GSM to move towards that 🙂

You are at least 20 years away from anything like that happening. That will be more like 5G or 6G.

hey, I had almost forgot this topic.

There was something I wanted to be sure about, too. In the T-Mobile forum, I posted a topic about which carrier between Cingular and T-Mobile was the best option for prepaid service. Ruff tells me that to get a new prepaid account, I'd have to buy a new phone, instead of just popping in a SIM and off I go. Ralph, you work for Cingular, correct? Could you confirm/deny this for me, please?

I tell you I think that is the case, but am not 100% sure. Just clearing that up so that somebody doesn't try to make me out as a liar.

I never said you are a liar, Ruff, and I would never. I just thought that since Ralph works for Cingular, he could confirm, or not what you said.

But it *is true* that I didn't specified that you weren't 100% sure... if someone treats you of liar, the blame lies on me, and I apologize for it, buddy.

I know you weren't calling me a liar. It is just some people's nature on here to twist others words into something that was never said. I was saying that to prevent other people making me out as a liar.

Yes... too many viper tongues out there. The blame lies with me, though... I didn't specified you weren't 100% sure... and anyone saying that Ruff is a liar deserves getting their ideas sorted out with the assistance of my assistant aluminium Louisville Slugger. 🙂
