If i never pay my bill, what will eventually happen to my service? Will it be cancelled all together? What happens to my 2 yr contract??

Eventually it will cancelled and you will have to pay the Early Termination Fee. If you don't pay this it will be sent to a collection agency who from there can take it to whatever lengths the law allows.

Yeah, watch out. They'll sue you for $300. Well, they can. I'm sure it's really not worth it. And, on your part, is it worth the hassle of being called 20 times a day?

You get cancelled, the ETF is applied, then if you continue to ignore it it will go to a collection agency which can add any amount of penalties to the base amount it wants. You will have a very difficult time getting phone service through any other carrier, and someday when you're trying to buy a house or a car you will have to pay off the inflated amount the collection agency wants in order to be able to get said house or car.

Yeah, that just happened to me. I'm having to pay an old ETF from Verizon because of the house loan we are getting. Why do they do that? Why ensure that another company gets money that they haven't gotten already for like 4 years? It's none of their dang business, and I really wonder if it's legal for one company to be able to force you to pay something you owe to another company just to do business with them in the first place. Not that I'm complaining about it..an ETF isn't THAT much....but still it's the point of the matter. I'm paying this company to watch out for my interests...not the interests of every other company in america who puts something negative on my credit report.

It's not a question of money, per se, it's that mortgage companies are loath to lend to people who are in the habit of letting things default or don't take care of incorrect items on a credit report. When I went to get my house loan, I was shocked shirtless to find that a video rental store had charged me 1500.00 for some videos they they said I never returned--only problem was that these videos were checked out about three weeks after I moved out of state. I figure some employee overheard me talking about the move and decided to help himself to his favorite tapes... 🙄 So I had to write a letter to get it cleared up, especially since I was going for an FHA loan and they're a little picky...

Now us having to act as a collection age...

That was one (of the very few) nice things about consumer protection laws in CA. Collection agencies could only collect the original amount owed, no fees allowed.

I saw a bill for someone here in TX with almost $100 in fees for a $50 original bill.

Collection agencies are the scum of the earth--I have perfectly nice, reasonable customers who just want to get everything settled call in upset because they've been treated rudely, and it's all for no reason! They're ready to pay up, all the effers have to do is take the money and STFU, but no--they have to be arseholes... 🙄 I hate having to apologize for those trolls... 👿

Yeah, they're mostly a bunch of small time bullies who positively get off being jerks. They can't handle it when someone gets up on their hind legs and bitch slaps 'em... 🤣

One of the reasons I commented about being "young" and not understanding credit, I was pretty stupid 10 years ago with mine.

I still occasionally get calls on some old stuff and they hate it when I tell them they legally can't collect and legally can't call anymore if I sent them a certain notice.

You have to be a certain ugly personality to enjoy that type of work.

Yeah, what is the timeframe on that? Some people tell me 7 years, some people tell me 10. How long is it before they can't collect anymore?

Well, depending on your state in may be as little as one or two years. The statute of limitations on a debt for which someone can get a judgement (and forcably collect) is much less than the time in which you REALLY pay for it. That is when it hangs around on your credit report and messes with everything you try to do as previously mentioned (your credit history and credit scores). Those can be there for 7 to 10 years depending on the item and your state.

The collection agencies can't legally (as in judgement) collect and you can send them a letter and by law they can no longer call you. It is in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (Article 7 or 8 I believe). If you inform them you have no intention of paying they can no longer ca...

Ok...thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. So here's my question then. If, in my state, you can only legally collect for 2 years (for examply), can a house loan really force you to pay that amount just cuz it's still on the credit report? Wouldn't that be an illegal collection then?

No, because they aren't a government agency, and they don't HAVE to give you a loan, and you don't HAVE to accept their conditions--just if you want to buy a house. 🙄 It's a Catch-22 kind of situation...

It might be to help you qualify for your loan. With the bad debt on there, your FICO score may be too low.

They can require you to pay since it reflects your payment history, and that is what determines your loan type.

My best friend did a little jail time a couple years ago, and in the process his verizon phone went deliquent. A collection agency called his house and his wife answered. They explained what they were calling about, and she told them that he was in jail, and they wouldn't be receiving any money right now. They then asked her if she would like to take responsibility for the bill. She said no. They then tried to tell her they would see to it that he stays in jail longer if she didn't pay his bill...needless to say, she was pretty mad.
