hey everyone...my name is razzy and i'm new! lol

anyways, i use a laptop, and i use regular cable modem access for internet with aol

i pay roughly 45 to 50 a month for the cable internet thru my cable company (adelphia)

and now i am thinking of getting cingular's unlimited data with pc card thing

right now for military people (which i am) theres a promotion going to get the Sony Ericsson GC83 pc card for free, and unlimited data connect for 60 a month which is good, right?

how much do other companies charge for unlimited data with pc cards monthly? i think verizon is like 80 and i am not sure about tmobile

mine is 60 a month for unlimited with the military discount

my question is, is the gprs/edge service reliable? i am ...

I have a co-worker that was using the GC83 (which is free after rebate with a 2 year in my area) on his Sony Vaio and it was great! I mean not as fast as cable but right up on par with DSL though. I think that if you are getting the discount on the service (because for normal folk it's $79.99 a month) I would go for it. As long as you have the signal you will be fine!🙂

how much slower is DSL to Cable? will i even be able to tell the difference? and is cingular's data network as good as its calling network? i think its calling network is fantastic but i dont wanna get the pc card and see otherwise as far as data goes! lol

DSl has a large variance in speeds. I have SBC Yahoo, and if I spend more, I get faster speeds. It varies from 128KB/s to 1.2 MB/s. Cable's normally faster than DSL, but can get slowed down if too many people use the Cable hub.

To be honest I really don't know, because from area to area it varies. Me, I never had anything but dial up and then cable, so I am kinda in the dark on that. And as for the data network, everywhere you have signal to make a call you have either GPRS or EDGE, so you should be good. And thank you for being in the military, I know its kinda cheesy to say, but you are what is helping keep our country safe, and I thank you for that. And also for your continued business and support 😁

cable is generally 2-3 times faster than DSL. Latency is usually where DSL excels.

EDGE speeds are LOW DSL speeds. roughly 130-200 kbps. Average DSL is around 500kbps. You WILL notice a difference going from cable to EDGE.

in comparison, i also have Adelphia. my download speeds are around 2.8 mbps (2800 kbps), so going from 2800 to 180 is about what you will percieve.

don't get me wrong, ...

It all depends on the speed of your cable company. Most are 4 Mbps for that price (unless you are also paying for a modem rental) then you might be getting UP TO 2 Mbps. DSL, as was previously stated, varies as well but the starting packages are usually only 300 kbps.

In general, wireless is going to be slower than a decent DSL or cable package. What you are getting is portability. When you are getting a signal (not sure how it is where you live) it works very nicely. Speed is also subjective. If you were going from dial-up I'd say you will love it. If you had a good cable package you may find it slow. Try it first and see what you think. If you buy it from a Cingular direct or Cingular branded agent location they will have 30 re...
