That is false. If you look at the Cingular phones with 3G many of them say CDMA by Qualcomm.
While CDMA is not the same as WCDMA neither is GSM. It is a new technilogy that incorporates many of the best features of both techs.

the reason why qualcomm, puts those stickers on 3g phones for cingular is because they produced the chipsets, any other company can produce 3GSM(UMTS/HSDPA) chips but qualcomm again, dominates in that field

to add WCDMA is the CDMA version of GSM, its gsm all the way, the current 2g gsm is just the TDMA version of gsm, the same goes for IS-95, 1xrtt, and 1xEVDO, are standards that use CDMA, they are not CDMA per se. qualcomm did not invent cdma, they built wireless technology on cdma and made improvements to it, as gsm made improvements to TDMA when it was developed in the '80s in europe. what gsm did to TDMA, is now what they are doing to CDMA, improving it. im loyal to the GSM platform.

I think that in the US there will always be CDMA and GSM. I've heard some people say that eventually, these two will evolve into one standard technology, but I don't see this happening. I say this because GSM has a lot more market share than CDMA and even though CDMA is (for some reason mostly used in the Americas -which is not where the manufactures develop it-) doing pretty well with the 3G path it chose.

I personally don't think that either technology is going to prevail. We are already looking away from current standards to newer ones such as WiMax. Eventually all carriers are going to end up taking the same upgrade path to one technology.

Sure, it's theoretical. But only because nobody has tested it in real world conditions yet. Sprint has already chosen WiMax as it's 4G technology and with the few other choices out there, I think the rest of the carriers will be doing the same eventually.

Imagaine the roaming capabilities if all carriers were one of the same. Then the only thing that would differntiate one carrier form another is the plans, this of course being said that roaming agreements are in place with each carrier. I think the competition will increase dramatically which should benefit the consumer.
