A question for Rich Brome

MANIAC

I need a non-bias answer to one one question... will ATT be carrying voice over the "3G" UMTS WCDMA component of their network?

I have had some ATT network folks tell me that voice is carried there.

I had believed that "3G" was dedicated to data transmissions alone...

If voice is to be carried on the 3G network the conventional voice gsm (tdma) technology is done with... is that correct?

Please advise.

No, UMTS/WCDMA carries both. Unlike CDMA carries, AT&T and T-Mobile (or any GSM based 3G network in the world for that matter will carry both voice and data)
GSM will soon be used for voice only "a la CDMA" in order to free up a lot of spectrum that's being used inappropiatly by people with 3G phone without a data plan. People without an unlimited data plan will have access to the 3G network "a la Verizon" this means that your phone will be on 3G until you make a phone call and your phone switches to GSM to carry your call on GSM. This is done through the N-SET upgrade, this is the smartest thing ...

All good... I am only looking for corroboration from the techs at ATT... I have viewed the transitions, migrations, and definitions... the definitions do not "define" the fact that voice will be carried simultaneously with WCDMA

Its a pretty widely known fact that ATT uses their UMTS network for voice as well as data 🙄
