AT&T's DIRTY LITTLE SECRET IN TEXAS

Austiniter

Mar 3, 2009, 6:05 AM
Everyone who has a Blackberry or iPhone in Texas, especially in the Austin and Central Texas area are experiencing horrific number of dropped calls, busy signals, constant congestation notices on their phones. This is affecting all AT&T phones I'm told, 2.5g and 3g. AT&T employees and managers call it: DEATH STAR. AT&T reportedly has had this issue now for 3-5 months, but is too cheap to go in and upgrade their network so if you're getting huge amount of dropped calls you may want to begin switching over to another carrier. If you're in the San Marcos, TX area good luck as most calls can't even get out or placed.

i doubt its due to att being "too cheap". I am sure that the area you are talking about is a big market for them. I bet its more than att being "cheap". I live in a new att market, slower and smaller, they are rebuilding our whole network out here. Att has plenty of money.

They are giving notices to everyone in a few towns around here saying they have 60 days to port their number to another carrier before their service is canceled (early term fees are waived)

Apparently these customers are costing the company more than they are paying because of roaming issues.
I haven't heard of this problem before... anyone know why it is happening?

This is something that Cingular started a few years back (2005). This is nothing new and was well documented here and many other boards.

If you generate $50 in revenue each month and cost them $100 in roaming (and that is a small figure) you are going to get axed.

ah alright. I guess these people finally went over the limit then...

I feel bad for the att corp store up the road though. a lot of people come here after they go there and scream at them...

If they are getting cancelled it because they have been going over their limit for a very long time.

AT&T did this to my friend who lives in North Dakota.

Verizon is the only network who has an Unlimited Roaming.

Everyone els has a "Limit Usage" like AT&T.

They dont charge, but too much of Roaming will result in loss of contract.

Verizons Unlimited Calling is REAL Unlimited.

AT&T, Sprint, Boost, T-Mobile, Cricket, Metro PCS, ect. have a reasonable usage thing.
Not Verizon.

I could be wrong but I think if you call more than 50% of your calls off network they will cancel you or not let you upgrade. I have seen it where they dont kick them off but they will wait for the customer to use less than 50% off network to upgrade them. Maybe it's 40%, shoot, I will have to look it up.

You're "roaming" whenever you make or receive a call using a transmission site outside your Home Rate and Coverage Area, or using another company's transmission site. Your wireless phone may sometimes connect to and roam on another company's network even when you're within your Home Rate and Coverage Area or Local Calling Area. There may be extra charges (including charges for long distance, tolls or calls that don't connect) and higher rates for roaming calls, depending on your Plan.

Nothing on there about too much Roaming.

The Roaming charges and all are for our old plans, the America's Choice. On America's Choice, there were some areas of Roaming

We no longer have those, but some customers do.

Out new plans are called Nation Wide Plans, no Roaming charges, ect.

Thats why it says on select plans... aka America's Choice.

Verizon allows you to use there network as much as you like, even Roaming which is called Extended Network.

There are no roaming charges cuz they eat them, meaning they don't pass those charges onto the customer. AT&T (cingular) has been doing this since 2002. AT&T gives you 3 months of consecutive roaming, as more than 50% all your calls being while roaming, before they notify you about you being termed. This would happene only to someone who moves from, say, Miami to somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Oregon.

Not just Oregon, but anywhere out west, WY, NM, SD, ND, KA, Nebraska, ect. ect. ect.

Verizon does not have a limit on how much you can Roam.

So Verizon will keep every single customer that costs them more in roaming charges than they make in revenue? It's noble then, hopefully they don't have a lot of people like that.

I liked the other part about terminating people if they lie to then or curse at them. I wonder if anyone ever gets dumped cause they went on a rant to s CSR on the phone.

I live on the Canadian Border and international roaming is quit frequent here. I have Verizon and NO problemo there. I had at&t 3 years ago and the sales rep told us at the store that we had a tower here. When we got the cancelation notice, I called and they told me that we didn't have a tower above Albany. Needless to say, I won't go back to at&t.

Verizon DOES cancel folks for too much roaming. They may be less likely to do it, but they will. All carriers have what they call "reasonable usage" clauses, not just with roaming, but in general.

How dumb am I? Apparently, less than you. No company can afford to let you roam all of the time. There's no money in it. If You're paying VZW 50 bucks a month for service, and it's costing them 100 bucks in roaming fees they have to eat, then simple mathematics will tell you they aren't going to continue that relationship for very long.

NOTHING on there says ANYTHING about Roaming.

What you are saying is what you think.

And what you think is 100% wrong.

They DO NOT cut your service off for to much Roaming usage.

Verizon makes enough where they don't need to.

You DO NOT have proof.

Well if one understands business they don’t want to waste money. Companies are doing everything they can for cost measures in this awful economy. If Verizon could get away from paying roaming charges they would, that is why they have been buying up companies. Furthermore, it is common and business sense. They don’t own 100% of the combined network that is why they have roaming in the first place.

It is a generalization. Meaning they can do as they wish. If they detect heavy usage while roaming they will. Language to me is clear that they can. Perhaps seek a lawyer.

I don’t need proof. Again, it is common sense.

This cellphonejoke sounds a awful like that 12 yr old "tylerrockk08 or w/e. He thinks he knows everything. Yet he has yet to post a link saying VZW doesn't cut people off. Coal Country PA. (Schuylkill County)

There is a local carrier here called Immix that operates several GSM towers. Most of the people coming in because their service is being cut off are from a town called New Philadelphia. What we think happened is either immix bought the towers covering the area, or they owned them to begin with and just recently jacked the roaming rates through the roof (immix is known for being shady when it comes to everything, and have bottomed out prices for plans, so they need to make the money somewhere)
