The subject says it all. I have NetMedia $15/month plan and want to confirm that it is free to use this (unlimited) for sending/receiving instant messages.

Thanks .... Craig

If you are logging into a AIM messenger program from MediaNet then yes, your medianet package would cover the usage. If you are using them as texts (encourperating each message right into the inbox of your phone) then they would be charged as text messages, so make sure your either on the right program or have a texting feature.
If this doesn't make sense or you have further questions you can call customer care at 1-800-331-0500, or 611 from your wireless phone.

The MediaNet $15 plan is great for internet use, but ATT considers IM as a form of text. There usually is a small internet conntection (which you will not get charged anything for because of the unlimiter MediaNet) but all instant messages are considered text. You need to be sure to have the Unlimited Message plan ($20 for individuals, $30 for family group) or you will be charged 20 cents for each incoming and outgoing message.

the way to bypass this is go to AIM.com and sign into the mobile messenger service, then its only charged as time on the medianet.

Thanks to both of you for replying. Let me explain exactly what I was trying to do.

I am new to AT&T and currently use the Nokia 6650 Fold, and have $15 MediaNet service on it. From the main menu, there is an icon marked "Messaging", which I select. This gives me more icons, from which I select "Instant Messaging". This allows me to sign into one of several services, and I select (and log into) AOL Instant Messenger, using the same id that I use on my home system. Any messages sent to me appear on my home system and my phone.

Am I being charged for each in/out message coming this way???

If so, can you explain more detailed how I bypass this by going to AIM.com?

Text messaging is the very biggest rip-off of the carriers. It i...

Yes, to use THAT service you will be charged for each message as a individual text message. To use the mobile service that is similar to your home's system simply go to your webbrowser, go to AIM.com, not AOL.com, (AolInstantMessenger) and click on the AIM log in screen, log in and just run the chat system through your web browser.
In reguards to your claim about text messaging, DUH!
Did you know to make a Big Mac it costs McDonald's roughly half a cent? Yet they have been charging anywhere between a dollar to 4 dollars for years...
Just because it doesn't cost AT&T much to actually transfer your message doesn't mean they can't charge you whatever you want. If $20 bucks is gonna break your bank or if you don't wanna pay it to "stick it to...

ajlineman -- thanks for the extended information. I will try that.

Regarding text messaging, I didn't mean to insult anyone's intelligence. I've been in the technology field for 32 years, and I can't think of any technology-based function which continues to go up in price. Personally, I think that making technology advancements more available (affordable) is good for the country. States *could* make every highway a tollway, raising revenues, but I don't think that would be a good thing.

$20 per month on each of our family phones would definitely have an impact to this family, so we won't be doing it.

In general, I agree that AT&T has the right to charge what they want for their services. In a competitive market, things usually ...

No problem on the post.
And I guess we can agree to disagree.
However something I wanted to point out that I'm not sure you were aware of.
On a family plan with AT&T you can provide EVERY line on that plan (maximum of 5) with unlimited text messaging for only $30, bringing the per line charge for unlimited text messaging to around $7?
Don't know if you care but saw you mention family plan and thought I'd point it out.

P.S. I wouldn't suggest posting your real name on here, it says something about it in the T&C's and "Forum Police" (Other members posing as some sort of forum law enforcement) love to jump down your throat about it.

Hi,

Reluctantly, I have added the $5/month feature for 200 text messages to two of the lines. I still feel the same way about it -- sort of like the electric company telling me that they want to charge a 100-fold higher rate (per KWH) for the electricity going to my clocks than to my lights (time to switch the clocks to batteries).

So, I guess that's a compromise :-)

And thanks for the info about putting one's real name in the posting -- I didn't know it was against the rules (of course, you don't know if that is my *real* name!).

Thanks for your help,

Anonymous :-)

😎 You'll never be charged for text messages. Only Kb. I've used it for 3 years now. You'll be able to be logged on to AIM, Yahoo, and MSN IM at the same time.
