Im so sick and tired of customers coming in and wanting us to help them with there plan, not adding features or anything, then going to walmart and upgrading because they have cheaper phones!
I just had a situation where this lady came in, and was all like "ohcan you help, we are wanting to upgrade a line and add one, and maybe moving a line over to another account" so I spend about 30 minutes with them, letting helping them save money and giving them all account details, then she goes ok well what free phones do you have. and I tell her, well at the time we are not offering Free phones, except just one. And she was like "well walmart has all sorts of free phones" and I tried explaining "Walmart is Walmart, we have more varieties and our...

There's no tactic, or trick, or big secret to Wal-Mart. A good salesman can compete with Wal-Mart. You said it yourself, they're service sucks. Then give them incredible service that will make them come back to you. Telling a customer to change they're plan at Wal-Mart gains you nothing. Telling them like that loses you everything. If I were her not only would I come back I would tell my friends not to go there. You didn't have a bad experience, the customer did, and they're who counts. You said she didn't add features, try a new selling method, tell her adding this saves her that. Adding this makes these five phones free. Whatever your policy is, let her know that. Don't just tell her we only have one. Wal-Mart isn't your problem, it's the ...

I agree. Give a customer a bad experience they tell 10 people. Give them a great experience they tell 2.
I just tell people that yeah our phones might be a little more expensive but thats because we are full service salesman. We can make the changes and do it the right way the firsttime and that they should make this important purchase wherever they feel comfortable. And that there are several models under $50 that will be great phones.
One time I did what I wasn't supposed to do. I told them how walmart is ruining local economies and causing the taxpayer more money and that if they have integrity they will support a local business over a big box retailer.....they actually listened and bought from me.
P.S. Or you could just tell ...

Well see the thing is though, I was giving them great service. Laughing, smiling all of that. Then she just goes and says she is going to go to walmart and upgrade and add a new line. I wasent rude to her at all. I just got stuck cause I was actually shocked at that when she said that. She still said thank you for my time and all that and I thanked her. Besides she was adding a new line also and they were changing to a family talk rate plan. And she wanted free cool phones. It was then once I told them, about how Walmart is walmart and they buy they're own bulk or however they can sell the phones so cheap...i try and say Uhhh well they are older phones. lol I guess i am not that great of a sales person, i mean I sell...just were not a cut t...

Yeah. You can't win them all. I try to get the best pricing possible but profit margins are getting thinner and thinner these days.

Ok, so I know I'm a few days late in posting to this, but I'm going to do it anyway. Our Wal-Mart here is notorious (aren't most of them?) for not having anyone in the phone center and making people wait up to 30 minutes for someone to come over.
We've simply started telling people that it's a shame that certain other "business retailers" are undercutting small, locally owned business in favor of a quick profit. Our RAE (when he did get back to us) actually said that, if we put it that way, it was fine. We also remind people that Wal-Mart doesn't have the overhead we do and that they may have someone who sells the phone, but the person selling them the phone was probably only trained in how to stack paper towels and produce, not in readi...

A couple points that may help you in the future:
#1 - Sell them FIRST on why your store is better and that often times better deals are not all that better in the end because of what you can offer. No need to mention Wal-Mart specifically but they will get it when you talk about training and why you are better for them than someone who also stocks bicycles every other day.
#2 - Ask where they have been, what they have seen FIRST. You can often times counter that FREE phone mentality by offering something Wal-Mart may not have.
#3 - Shop your competition. Know what deals Wal-Mart, Radio Hack and Best Buy have BEFORE you go into a sale. Oftentimes they do not always have the latest and greatest handset and you can sell a customer ...

Remember many stores offer things that Wal-Mart does not:
Memory Exchange - Our machine can also do pictures, sms, videos and unlocked ringtones. We can even backup your memory to a USB memory card (if your store does not have one I suggest getting one because these things have saved many sales for us)
Free SIM replacement - You burn out your SIM and buy from us it is free, otherwise it is $25
Free Bill Analysis
Better Selection of both phones and accessories - We carry a large selection of bluetooth and cases. We can offer a discount on items they cannot even buy at Wal-Mart, but only if they activate with us.
Add these to a top quality sales experience and you won't lose very many sales to Wal-Mart, Radio Hack or Best Buy....

Just curious, how much does one of those memory exchange devices cost and what is a good vendor to purchase one from?
...
You usually have to buy them new directly from Cellebrite. The UME-36 is the do it all machine. Expect to spend about $1000 for one but you own it at that point. Software upgrades are free. You just have to buy new cables on occasion (for instance they just launched the iPhone cable). You can pick up older UME-24 machines on ebay but they only exchange phonebook memory.
I have one for sale if you like :-)
...
I'll have to pitch the expense to my District manager first. Which is a much harder sell than overcoming a free phone. 🤣
...
They are almost common place lately. How many stores does your company have?
...
Hundreds of stores in ten states, including Texas by the way. lol
...
You work for Prime or Cellular World?
...
Ok. Don't think you will get too far with them but good luck.

The only way to get rid of a Wal-mart is pitchforks and torches!

Wait! Isn't Walmart from hell, itself?
...
walmart will hold credit card info for 6 months i believe and if you change the rate plan within the first 6 months they charge you for the phone on the credit card up to 200 dollars i believe.... can anyone confirm that?
...
If you buy from them online you are really buying from Let's Talk. And yes, Let's Talk does have a great deal of shady business tactics.

Even the best salespeople can lose sales to a customer who's vision of value rests solely on the cost of the handset.
Trust me I have no love for Wal-Mart. I do not shop at any of their locations for more reasons than I care to list.
I even had a Sam's agent outright lie to a customer of mine to sell her the exact same headset I had sold her the day before (she bought a Z9i Bluetooth from me, and returned it the next day because she bought a "newer" Z9i bluetooth from Sam's. I was tempted to tell her that I just got an even NEWER one that arrived five minutes before she got here but I declined to play ping pong with her gullibility).
I don't think it is out of line to make it clear to the customer that if they need training, help...

To kill the Wall-Mart you must go to the TV section and take out the heart of the Wall-Mart. But be warned the Wall-Mart will lower its prices to keep you from killing it.
Its a dangerous adventure but I know you will make it.
God speed and good luck

I Hear ya man. I think everyone goes through this same thing over and over again. One thing I can say from experience is give people excellent service and give them a reason to pay the extra $20 or $30 to work with you. Walmart may have cheaper phones but you get what you pay for with those phones. Sale the customer on you not your product. if you give them great service they will come back to you. I have had many customers say they will come to me and pay a little bit more just because of the great service that me and my reps offer.
