I have a complicated story. I had service with Bellsouth Mobility back in 1997. Actually, it was in my name for my brother. He ran up the bill and never told me that he didn't pay it. That was 11 years ago. Well in Jan 2007, I applied for service with Cingular (Formerly Bellsouth Mobility) and they told me I had a bill over $1,000. But, they would let me have service because this bill was so old and written off. well I had service for less than a month and cancelled it because of the reception where I lived at the time. Now, a year and a half later, I moved and wanted to go back to Cingular, now AT&T. They're refusing telling me that I owe them a bill from way back in 1997 for over $1,000! Again, the same bill they told me was wri...

They gave the 1 time exception they do not normally give service to someone with an outstanding bill regardless if it is written off. It was under your name and you are financially responsible for it. It is on your credit report by the way. I would make your brother pay the bill and after that they can start service.

One other thing MAY happen (and I emphasize may) is that when you or your brother does pay ATT, if you run credit again, it may come back with a deposit. Unfortunately, since the account was turned over to collections and it shows up on your credit (along with it being in ATT's files as an account turned over to collections) there may be a deposit required to get service set up.

I am sorry that your brother messed up by not paying the bill, but the account was in your name and run on your credit. A hard lesson learned.

This is true. If an account has been written off to collections then there is typically a $500 deposit to resume service. But, they might have a time frame as to where this can be taken off your account. But regardless, it doesn't matter if it was your brother or santa clause using the cell phone. You are the one who assumed financial responsibility on the dotted line.

What exactly do you think "written off" means?

It definately does not mean you do not owe the money anymore. While they cannot legally effect your credit at this point they certainly have no obligation to allow you to run up another $1000 and not pay it. Whether or not it is true, the "brother did it" story has been told a million times. It didn't work for the other 999,999 people and I doubt it will work for you. Simply because you slipped past the system last time does not obligate them to allow it again.

When I asked how to get around it, I meant making payment arrangements seperately while getting service again. I was also asking why they would tell me it was gone then tell me it wasn't. I didn't understand that. BTW, my brother really did do it. I've had Sprint for 13 years now except when I went to Cingular for that one month. Thanks for your help, those of you who were actually helping. As for the few dildos who were smart asses, you can go to hell.

Unfortunately it has to be paid in full before you can even start new service especially if another agency owns the account.

Everyone was right you do have to pay any old accounts and when I've had customers who have tried new service and have had written off account that had been paid C&A has told me that they automatically get a $500 deposit per line for new service.

i disagree with this ....

i had some customers (Not everyone now ) but some of these people had charge offs and IIRC they were under $1000 owed

there deposits were somewhere in the $0 to $300 range
whereas i have seen some $500 also

not every case is $500 but most likely u can look at paying that to reactivate service
