Just wondering if a future software release will turn on any video capability this phone has.

Well Will, it's your lucky day! I downloaded the 4.5 OS and it does indeed have video capabilities on my 8310.

Here's the direct link to vodaphone's upgrade sight:

http://www.vodafone.de/hilfe-support/blackberry/1162 ... »

but if I were you I'd start at crackberry.com, scroll down to the post about it on the front page.

Have you found a non-branded 4.5 OS? Don't really want the Vodafone branding...

It doesn't have vodafone branding. You just download the file, delete the vendor.xml and it comes exactly as it would from at&t. Obviously choose english as your language too and it's all good. I suggest following the directions on crackberry.com about how to do it. It's in the forums for the 8310.

I don't use push to talk so I can't say for sure if there are any errors. Here are some links, download the vodafone OS then follow the instructions:

http://crackberry.com/vodafone-germany-releases-os-4 ... »

Just know there are always risks involved with installing an operating system not directly from at&t. I didn't have any problems, but make sure you follow instructions carefully.

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.3, download from BlackBerry - BlackBerry - Sys Req V4-3
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded. (Choose the Curve 8310)
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\r...

Odd. I don't know if it's the same link, but I didn't have to delete the xml and haven't had any issues. Still says AT&T when I turn it on.

So did you just upgrade to 4.5.0.37? I think the vendor tag might just default you to vodafone's preferences or something. I don't know, I just delete it every time.

I upgraded to 4.5.0.18. Is there a big difference between it and .37? The link I posted in the BB forum is to the 4.5.0.18. 😕

Weird! I downloaded it from here. It was posted on Crackberry before the .37 version. I don't know where the 8310 link went. 😕

if you have the new 4.5 os, you can't download it via mobile.blackberry.com

You can however click this link and downloaded it. I'm waiting to see if it works.

Now it is "bricked", I spent many hours yesterday and even a few this morning trying to fix it.

Now I need to know how to restore my phone back to the just left the store state.

I have tried

Wipe device from the security settings
refreshing the OS through BB Desktop

Nothing seems to work.

I am back to OS 4.2.2

I lost my favorite theme though, anyone know where I can find the theme that combined the Zen and Today themes? I think it was called Today Plus

Where did you get that theme originally?

PS, what happened to your phone? Why did it brick? I am curious, I was going to put OS 4.5 on a co-workers phone but I don't want to risk it if there are issues.

If I remember correctly, I downloaded it from Crackberry. It came out the same time as the "Scribble" theme, but I can't find either one.

I think upgrading to 4.5 is safe, it was my first time messing with the BB OS, and I didn't follow that instruction to delete the vendor.xml file. All in all, it was a collection of errors on my part more than the upgrade itself.

As much as I liked the updated OS, I ended up going back to 4.2.2. Why? Because OS 4.5 is too new, and mobile.blackberry.com does not have any themes for it. I also found any 4.2.2 themes installed after installing OS 4.5 will mess up your phone.

Maybe I will revisit this update in a few months.

1) Video Capture
2) New blackberry browser, similar to Opera Mini
3) Improved e-mail, more like html viewing
4) New L Theme
5) Address book, font, various other small improvements

It's just better, and it seems to be running very smoothly on my 8310.

I did try the 8100 4.5 on my other phone and it DID NOT take well. Had to downgrade. So there are risks involved. If anyone wants to do it, I will throw down the info I have on it.

Wow, I can't believe how effective that was. It even somehow kept PTT on there... unbelievable.

The installation definitely gave me a scare though because it took my phone about 10 minutes to come back alive after the upgrade. I thought I had bricked it.

I'm restoring my contacts and everything as I write this, but I definitely recommend this to anyone with an 8310.

Glad to hear it, I also had to wait a long time for the phone to reboot, so worth it wouldn't you say? It made me keep the curve which I was going to return and wait for the Bold.

Yeah for the first time it takes about 2 hours. I could see myself doing it quickly the next time around (which I will most likely be doing for some coworkers).

As long as you delete that vendor.xml from the 4.5 software I believe your BB will retain the AT&T stuff, like PTT. I also still have the AT&T splash screen at startup.
