Cingular's "Tax and Surcharge" more than TWICE of Tmobile's
TMobile only charged me $5.40 for the same items.
Both Cingular and Tmobile charged me $1.20 in "Federal Excise Tax ($1.20)", but only Cingular chaged "State & Local Tax ($4.40) - California".
Also TMobile's 911 fee was 27 cents while Cingular tacked a FULL $3.22!!! Man I need to make some 911 calls if I'm going to fork out so much for the service ;)
Can anyone enlighten me why Cingular's surcharge is more than TWICE of TMobiles???
Looks like highway robbery to me.
In the welcome kit, there is two columns.. First Month and Monthly... My first month came up to $105 (which I'm not complaining)... its the monthly column that shows a surcharge of $13.
Lets put it this way, anyone else on Cingular in CA gets a monthly $13 surcharge on a plan for $39.99??
A bit confused. Are you saying that T-Mobile in an MVNO-operator like Virgin Mobile? I thought that T-Mobile did own their own infrastructure, like in N.Y., and other part's of the U.S, etc. And aren't they in the process of purchasing Cingular's network in CA? Sorry...Please clarify. 🤭

They are in the process of purchasing the infrastructure but as of now the CA network they use is really Cingular's and pre-merger the network in NY was T-Mobile. That is the JV that they entered into three years ago. That are not an MVNO at all beace an MVNO does not own any spectrum or network infrastructure at all. T-Mobile is an actual carrier they just didn't have thei...

Let's just say that Cingular has a hell of alot more subscribers than T-mobile. With all their towers, networks cell sites, etc.. it costs more to provide us with great signal quality and sound. think about it

Agreed; AtTheMet's post explained it quite nicely.

Naw, definately seen worse, MD. 😁
I did not move, I just changed providers...so for whatever reason $39.99 is on Cingular is NOT $39.99 on TMobile.
I have no problems paying taxes, but IF Cingular charges twice more for taxes than Tmobile for services offered in the SAME location... something is wrong.
Again, it could just be an error in the "welcome kit".. so I'll refrain from posting until I get the real bill.
Most of the taxes and surcharges are a percentage based of the total amount charged, and some of the fees are a percentage of your useage.
It always interests me when a customer calls in to cancel his/her account b/c they believe the government will charge them less taxes with a different carrier.
It is Cingular's problem if somehow they have to charge more for tax and they have to compensate either by charging less for their plans or win over their customers by better coverage (which IMHO they have).
Taxes are assessed by the government, whether at a national, state or local level. In thoery, these shouldn't change when applied n the same area for the same reasons (i.e.- the taxes on a 39.99 plan with one carrier should be the same as those with another carrier).
Fees and Surcharges are generally applied by the provider and can vary widely, even if for the same reasons. For example, different carries have different amounts charged for 911 compatibility or Local Number Portability. They aren't generally required by the government, but are often used to help defer the cost of maintaining certain required standards.
Furthermore, did you have any a...
