Forced upgrades?

So my family and I signed up for a family plan with AT&T before they switched to Cingular and back. After our contract ended ages ago, we never renewed it because we had a really good plan and nothing they had at the time could beat it for the price(they still can't).

I recently called customer service to talk to them about turning off my mmode email address because I was getting spam to that email, therefore getting ridiculous amounts of spam texts.

But anyways, one of the customer services reps told me that since I was on the OLD plans, that my service would be disconnected in(or after) February. Does anyone know about this or can link me an article about it? I've been looking but I have yet to find any information on it. And nothing...

yes, i believe february 18th is the date... i am a mail carrier on Long Island and ATT have been sending out letters to people with TDMA (old school ATT) that the service is going to disconnect on that date.

Our phones are GSM. We're old school, but not THAT old school. haha. Maybe the rep didn't realize we were on GSM.

So maybe my service is ok then since we're not TDMA.

they may be stopping those plans as they are losing them money. They are within their right to make you get on a newer plan if you are not on a contract!

As far as we have been warned, Feb. 19th is the date in our market. That includes GSM and TDMA plans. You either upgrade to new plans or lose your number and go to another carrier. If you leave and go to one of the other carriers, don't wait till the 18th or 19th, you'll lose your number. ATT doesn't want the old, no profit plans on their network anymore. And as some CSR have told me, they are tired of old ATT customer calling in wondering why they can't get new phones on the old ATT plans.

Do you have a link to an article or the site where it says this? It's kind of irritating if it's true because we were never sent a notification. So it might just cut off on us.

Thanks for the info though! And if you could get me a link it would be much appreciated!

Oh, we're on the GSM network. Not TDMA or analog. Sorry, I thought I made that clear in the initial post. My bad.

We're on the GSM network with GSM phones, but we're just not on contract. And we haven't been for years.

But if you are on a TDMA pricing plan then you will still be shut off. Do you know what plan your on? It's possible your on a TDMA pricing plan or the rep is retarded. The latter is more likely...

I should be on a GSM pricing plan. I think the rep might just be retarded. She didn't sound very smart, which is one of the reasons why I didn't want to believe her. haha.

This website posted it along time ago. Att-Cingular-Att-Cellular One know that you have a gsm phone and you have the good 1000 minutes w unlimited nights and weekend for like 30 Dollars or a plan similar to that so yes, they want to uprade you because you are holding back progress to all of the other customers who want 3G. I might sound rude, please forgive me if i do, but I would call Att and see what they could do for you before you get a rude awaking on the 2/18 or 2/19. I think they even posted it here in November.

If any of you have questions about this stuff go to a COR(company owned retail) store you will get way better info, customer care gets paid bye the call, the more calls they get the more they get paid. so if you want detailed and accurate info go thier...as a Rep in a COR store I couldnt tell you how many customers come info with wrong info from them.

First, a correction about customer care:

Although the call centers get paid by the call, the reps do not. I worked in an AT&T Customer Care call center. Reps get paid an hourly rate. I see your point though. They may have changed policies since August as well.

As far as the AT&T Wireless plans, I would not be surprised if they completely shut those customers down soon. February 18th is a perfect date. They are shutting down the TDMA service. Why not just add those legacy customers with them? I can understand wanting to keep a great deal, but as CAD 5000 said, it is holding the company back. AT&T is doing the same thing with Cellular One customers who have the unlimited plan. They are being sent letters advising them not to go over a ce...

I have a friend that renewed his Cell One unlimited plan after the whole switch to AT&T on December 9th. Seeing he now has a fairly new two year agreement for unlimited with Cell One, would he get these nasty-grams?
I have already informed him about the 99.00 AT&T unlimited plan, he didn't sound interested.

He may get away with it till his contract is over, but ATT may just shut him down or force him to upgrade. ATT(Cingular at the time) got in trouble in CA for forcing TDMA to switch when they bought ATT Wireless but they would have learned their lesson and will not let that happen legally again. No GSM ATT customers have been let go, but a few have said that they can't text or visit Media Net. Could be their crappy phones or it could be ATT is gonna force them out.

You have GSM phones but along with the TDMA network the TDMA plans are being done away with. I recommend switching plans this week whether you get new phones or not.

If anyone else cares or is looking for an answer....we haven't been disconnected. So I guess it really was just the TMDA and Analog people being disconnected.
